The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 247
Leilani waited for a dozen seconds, but no one answered. She pursed her lips, tapping her fingertips lightly on the watch box, suddenly feeling a bit annoyed. As expected, acting on
impulse usually led to disappointment. It seemed she wouldn’t be able to surprise Callahan after all.
Leilani hesitated for a moment, then took out her phone and sent Callahan a message.
[Where are you right now? Are you home? I’m at your door.]
After sending it, Leilani leaned against the wall, looking down at the heavy shopping bags in her hand, feeling speechless.
It was all Micah’s fault, that psycho! If he wanted to give bags, fine, but why did he have to choose limited editions? It made it inconvenient for her to even throw them away. She would have to explain this clearly to Callahan later.
Although they hadn’t been dating for long, she could tell from their previous interactions that beneath Callahan’s cold exterior lay an extremely possessive nature. Now, Leilani was holding bags gifted by his nemesis. She could already imagine the look on Callahan’s face when he saw them. Just thinking about that scene made her want to sigh.
What a hassle. Why did the feud between Callahan and Micah have to involve her?
Leilani touched the watch box in her pocket and pursed her lips again. This was the first time she had bought a gift for a man. She wondered if Callahan would like it…
When she picked it out, she hadn’t thought too much about it; she just felt the dial design suited him. Then Clive, that troublemaker, had interrupted, killing her mood for shopping, so she hadn’t looked at any other stores.
Originally, Leilani really liked the watch. But now that she was about to give it, she felt uncertain. After all, as the Chairman of the Langley Group, the watches Callahan usually wore were surely auction-grade pieces. By comparison, would this one be too ordinary?
The empty corridor made it easy for one’s mind to wander.
While Leilani was lost in her thoughts, the recipient of the gift had just finished a meeting.
Callahan checked his phone and saw the messages from Leilani pop up on the screen. His gaze paused on the last few words.
[I’m at your door.]
They had been neighbors for a while, yet Leilani had never come up to his floor before. This was the first time.

Callahan assumed she had something urgent, so he immediately turned to his special assistant. “I’ve already processed the urgent files. I’ll handle the rest when I come back tomorrow. Organize the meeting minutes and send them to me; I’ll review them tonight. I’m leaving now. Call me if anything comes up at the company.”
With that, he strode directly toward the elevator, leaving the executives looking at each other in confusion.
The Langley Group headquarters wasn’t far from Celestial Heights. Ten minutes later, the elevator doors opened on the 19th floor.
Callahan looked up and saw Leilani standing at his door. Her slender figure looked even more delicate against the oversized shopping bags, giving her a somewhat pitiful appearance.
Leilani had been overthinking things right until he arrived. The elevator chimed. She looked up to see Callahan walking out, his suit crisp but his tie slightly loosened, clearly having rushed back.
Callahan’s gaze fell on Leilani’s thin clothes, and he frowned slightly. “Why didn’t you wear more when you came up? The weather is getting cooler; be careful not to catch a cold.”
Seeing him approach, Leilani instinctively straightened up and began to explain, “I have something for you.”
