The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 279
After hanging up the phone, Tamara collapsed onto the bed as if all her strength had been drained. She stared at the ceiling, her eyes filled with malice.
“Yvonne, don’t blame me. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for blocking my path!”
Two days had passed since Carola published that post. It had been taken down, and the heat had died down.
Leilani was just heading out to answer a request from the matriarch of the Conner family. The old lady had suffered a sudden flare-up in her legs and couldn’t walk. The Conner family had sought famous doctors to no avail, eventually reaching out to the “Miracle Doctor” Leilani through a contact. Thinking back to the investigation results Callahan had shared with her previously, Leilani suddenly felt a bit of anticipation.
The Conner Villa.
Lance Conner, the eldest grandson, was waiting at the door under the orders of his grandmother, Felicity. When he saw Leilani, he was visibly stunned. Undoubtedly, it was because the girl in front of him looked far too young. The rumored “Miracle Doctor” was a young woman in her early twenties?
But he quickly composed himself and nodded politely. “Dr. Sloan, I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Ini nodded faintly, her gaze sweeping over the Conner estate. Since her release from prison, she ad taken on quite a few cases from elite families. She was used to seeing these grand mansions.
Looking at Lance’s clearly mature and serious attire, Leilani gave him a meaningful look and asked, “Mr. Conner… do you happen to have a sister?”
Lance paused, not understanding why Leilani would suddenly ask this. But given her reputation as a miracle doctor, Lance answered honestly. “Yes, I have a younger sister named Carola Conner. Do you
know her, Dr. Sloan?”
Leilani smiled but didn’t answer.
Lance felt an inexplicable sinking feeling in his gut, but he didn’t press further, leading Leilani into his grandmother’s room.
Felicity’s condition wasn’t extremely serious. After experiencing a series of trials recently, Leilani had become even more proficient in her craft. Pulse check, acupuncture, prescription-it was all done in one smooth flow. Felicity’s legs, originally in unbearable pain, gradually felt relief under Leilani’s silver
needles.
Lance could see the change in Felicity. He let out a breath of relief, his eyes looking at Leilani with newfound respect. “Dr. Sloan, your acupuncture technique is truly impressive. What’s going on with my grandma’s legs?”
“She’s simply advancing in age. Her body is too weak for heavy supplements, and her meridians are

blocked, leading to poor circulation,” Leilani said calmly as she collected her needles. “Follow my prescription for recuperation, and she should be fine in half a month.”
Lance said gratefully, “Thank you, Dr. Sloan!”
Just then, the door was suddenly pushed open.
“Lance! I heard Grandma hired a miracle doctor. I came to see!”
A delicate, somewhat bratty voice rang out.
Leilani looked up, meeting Carola’s stunned gaze.
The air instantly froze.
Carola’s eyes went wide, and she pointed at Leilani in disbelief. “Why is it you? What are you doing here?”
Her loud, blustering reaction startled both Felicity and Lance. Especially since Leilani had just finished treating Felicity and was a guest of the family. How could she be so rude to a guest?
Lance frowned at Carola. “Carola, don’t be rude!”
“This is Dr. Sloan. She is the ‘Miracle Doctor’ Grandma specially invited to treat her legs. You can’t speak like that.”
Miracle Doctor? Leilani?
Carola’s expression shifted rapidly. She assumed Leilani held a grudge over what she had done and had come to scam her family.
