The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 316

Fitch’s defense of Tamara had gone beyond reasonable logic. Even though Tamara was suspected of murdering his own biological daughter, he was actually trying to exonerate her as if nothing had happened? The Sherwood family’s “defense” of the Sloan family seemed to have an

ulterior motive.

At this thought, Leilani’s gaze darkened slightly. The show, it seemed, was far from over. Destroying them completely right now would actually be boring. She wanted to see exactly what game Fitch was playing.

Seeing that Leilani had stopped pressing the issue, Fitch let out a sigh of relief. The Sloans also relaxed; after all, everyone was happy as long as Leilani didn’t keep pushing.

However, Yvonne couldn’t accept this outcome. Fitch’s attitude toward Tamara was a clear betrayal of her, his own flesh and blood. She burst out from the crowd, her eyes red and rimmed with tears, her voice choked with emotion. “Dad! Why are you protecting Tamara like this?”

She pointed at Fitch, her fingertip trembling slightly, filled with despair.” ‘Tamara almost killed me! Back when you all thought Leilani was the culprit, you didn’t have this attitude at all!”

What was so special about Tamara that she deserved such preferential

treatment?

Fitch’s face sank. “Yvonne! The situation is different now. Stop making a

scene. Can we discuss this later?”

Yvonne let out a cold laugh. Even now, Fitch thought she was just making a scene. She felt she could no longer communicate with them. “I’m making a scene? Fine! Then go ahead and keep protecting your ‘precious daughter-in-law’!”

With that, she turned and ran, tears streaming down her face.

Seeing this, Leilani immediately let go of Callahan’s hand and hurried to catch up with Yvonne. “I’ll go check on her.”

Callahan saw the worry in Leilani’s eyes and nodded. “I’m coming with you.”

The two quickly chased after her, leaving the banquet hall in chaos.

Seeing Yvonne run out crying, Milford instinctively stepped forward to chase her, but was stopped by Fitch’s sharp shout. “Stand still! Let her run! No one is allowed to go after her!”

Fitch’s face was grim, his voice suppressing his rage. “At a time like this, can you use your head? If you chase her now, who’s going to clean up this mess? Me?”

Milford paused, looking back at his father, his brow furrowed. “Dad, Yvonne is emotionally unstable. If something happens…”

“Something happens?” Fitch sneered, his eyes sharp as knives. “She contradicted me in front of so many people and embarrassed me, and now it’s my fault?”

He pointed at the door, his voice suddenly rising. “Isn’t she capable? Isn’t she trying to fight me? Fine! From today on, the Sherwood family doesn’t have a daughter named Yvonne!”

Milford’s pupils constricted. “Dad!”

Fitch stared at him coldly. “If you dare to chase after her, don’t bother coming back today!”

Milford froze in place, his fists clenched tight. He looked toward the door, out Yvonne’s figure had already disappeared.

Gloria stood to the side, wanting to speak but stopping herself. Finally, she just sighed and whispered. “Milford, listen to your father…”

Milford closed his eyes, his chest feeling as if a heavy stone were crushing it, a dull pain spreading. He slowly pulled back his foot, his

voice hoarse. “…I understand.”

Fitch huffed coldly, turned back to the guests in the banquet hall who

were still whispering, and put his polite smile back on, as if the rage from moments ago had never existed.

In his eyes, family interests always came above all else.
