The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 324
Milford fell silent for a moment before his voice came through, low and apologetic. “I’m sorry. I didn’t expect things to turn out like this…
“What’s the use of apologizing?” Yvonne’s voice trembled. “I want an apology from Tamara! I want her to confess!”
She gripped the phone, emphasizing every syllable. “Milford, I’ll say it again. Until this is resolved properly, I am not going back to the Sherwood family!”
With that, she hung up the phone. She couldn’t hold back anymore, and tears rolled down her cheeks.
Meanwhile, at the Sherwood villa.
Milford stared at the disconnected phone, his brow furrowed.
Gloria, seeing his expression, asked anxiously, “Well? What did Yvonne say?”
Milford glanced hesitantly at Fitch, choosing to soften Yvonne’s words slightly before relaying them. “She said she’s not coming back. Unless Tamara leaves this house, she won’t return.”
Fitch let out a cold snort, interpreting Yvonne’s words as a threat. “Let her throw her tantrum! We spoiled her too much. Now she thinks she can threaten her own parents! Leave her be. When she comes to her senses, she’ll come back on her own!”
Fitch didn’t take Yvonne’s ultimatum seriously. She had always lived under the protection of the Sherwood family and had barely experienced the real world. He believed that once she tasted a bit of hardship outside,
she would understand his intentions.
Fitch was unconcerned, but Gloria couldn’t be.
For the four years Yvonne had been bedridden, Gloria had cared for her meticulously. Yvonne had barely been home from the care facility for two days before ending up back in the hospital, and now she had run away. Why did her daughter have to suffer so much bad luck?
Tears instantly welled up in Gloria’s eyes. She spun around and screamed at Fitch. “It’s all your fault! If you hadn’t insisted on protecting Tamara, would Yvonne have run away?”
Fitch’s face darkened. “What are you yelling about? She’s being willful, and you’re adding to the mess?”
“I’m adding to the mess?” Gloria’s voice trembled, tears streaming down her face. “Fitch! That is my daughter! If anything happens to her, I will never forgive you!”
She stared dead at Fitch, pronouncing every word clearly. “You better pray Yvonne is safe! Otherwise! I’m divorcing you!”
The sentence hit like a sledgehammer, leaving the entire living room in dead silence.
Fitch’s face went pale, his fists clenched tight. His eyes widened, but he couldn’t get a single word out.
He stood there, his expression shifting rapidly. He never expected his usually docile wife to turn on him for their daughter’s sake. Nor did he expect Yvonne to be this stubborn.
And all of this was because of Tamara!
Gloria was on the verge of an emotional collapse. Seeing this, Milford quickly stepped forward to support her, speaking in a low, comforting voice. “Mom, don’t worry. Yvonne is with Leilani. She’ll be fine.”
Gloria grabbed her son’s arm like it was a lifeline. “Really? She’s really with Leilani?”
Milford nodded. “Yes, she told me herself.”
He paused, then added, “Leilani is an excellent doctor. With her there, Yvonne’s health won’t be an issue.”
Gloria let out a breath of relief, though the tears kept coming. “But… but she’s out there. What if she runs into bad people.”
The family had treated Leilani terribly in the past. Who knew if Leilani would use this opportunity to take revenge on Yvonne?
