The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 67
“I can’t remember clearly…” Yvonne pressed her temples, her expression pained. “I only remember two people standing at the stairwell… I can’t see the faces clearly…”
Yvonne tried desperately to recall, but the harder she pushed, the more her body’s defense mechanisms resisted. She held her head in agony, sweat beading on her forehead as fragmented images flashed before her eyes. She actually saw flashes: the cold wind on the rooftop, Tamara’s hateful eyes, the dizziness, the shoving at the stairs, Leilani’s shocked face…
“Ah… my head hurts…”
She curled up on the bed, her fingernails digging into the sheets.
Seeing his sister in pain, Milford immediately stepped forward and grabbed Leilani’s wrist to stop her, his grip strong enough to crush bone. “Enough! Are you trying to kill Yvonne?”
Leilani threw off his hand, her eyes sharp. “Milford, ask yourself honestly. Did you really investigate what happened back then? Everyone said I pushed her, but did you see it? Why couldn’t it be Tamara?”
Milford’s pupils contracted. “…What nonsense are you spouting?”
“That day, Yvonne asked to meet me to tell me a big secret about Tamara. But before she could tell me, Tamara overheard. She made an excuse to send me away, and by the time I came back, Yvonne had already fallen!” Leilani articulated every word. “If it was really me, why wouldn’t the Sloan family show you the surveillance footage? Why did the cameras break exactly when Yvonne had her accident? You Sherwoods actually believed such a coincidence!”
“You’re lying!” Milford interrupted sternly, but a seed of doubt sprouted uncontrollably in his
heart.
Leilani ignored him and stepped forward to press Yvonne’s temples and the base of her skull, massaging with moderate force to relieve the pain. She comforted Yvonne softly. “Yvonne, relax. With my treatment, your memory will return sooner or later. There’s no need to push yourself so hard right now.”
Clearly, after Leilani’s words, Yvonne was struggling to remember to clear Leilani’s name because she didn’t believe Leilani would hurt her. Seeing Yvonne’s suffering, Leilani felt a twinge of regret, thinking she shouldn’t have focused on arguing with Milford at the expense of Yvonne’s well-being.
Milford stood by, face tense, fists clenching and unclenching. Watching his sister’s pain felt like a hand squeezing his heart.
“Yvonne…” He stepped forward but dared not touch her, afraid of making it worse.

Leilani glanced at him coolly. “Don’t worry, her memory center is just stimulated. There’s no danger.”
Milford frowned. Even if Leilani didn’t push her, her eagerness to clear her name had caused Yvonne this pain. Inevitably, he felt resentment toward Leilani. “If you hadn’t brought up the past, why would she be so agitated?”
“Blame me?” Leilani couldn’t even be angry anymore; she just found Milford hopeless. She scoffed, her fingers steady on Yvonne’s acupoints.
