Chapter 143
Chapter 143:
Hearing Ashton’s words, Emalee stopped what she was doing and stared blankly at his departing figure. Her expression was complex, and she made no attempt to stop him.
Phillip had calmed down with the persuasion of the restaurant’s security staff.
After he settled down, he looked for Emalee to talk again. However, she had already left without a farewell.
Phillip felt useless and overwhelmed by his emotions. After some thought, he decided to seek help from his sister, Sheila.
Until now, Phillip was still unsure why Sheila had been upset with him on the day of the bidding event.
At this point, she was the only one who could assist him, so he was determined to win her over.
Sheila answered the phone and heard Phillip’s eager laughter. “Sheila, it’s been two days. You’re not still mad at me, are you? What did I do to upset you that day? Please tell me so I can make it right. But before that, I need a favor. I promise it’s nothing unreasonable!”
Sheila felt uneasy as Phillip suddenly called to ask for her help. She did not respond immediately. Instead, she glanced nervously at Ashton, who was sitting next to her and sipping coffee.
Although he hadn’t heard the content of the call, Ashton noticed the nervous expression on Sheila’s face and guessed who the caller was.
He smiled subtly and gestured for her to activate the speakerphone.
Sheila felt a surge of frustration. She internally scolded Phillip for always reaching out during her reports to Ashton.
Despite her irritation, she did not dare to deny Ashton’s request. With reluctance, Sheila enabled the speakerphone function. She hoped silently that Phillip would not complicate things further for her.

Unfortunately, things did not go as she hoped.
Before Sheila could give Phillip a subtle hint, he spoke up.
“Sheila, you’re not saying anything. Should I take that as a yes? It’s not a big request. I just need you to look into Ashton’s background. How could he be so ostentatious at…”
“Such a major bidding event? I can’t stand it. Why does he have to be so pretentious? I really dislike him!” Phillip’s words made Sheila’s heart sink.
On the surface, he was merely asking her to help investigate Ashton. But in reality, he was clearly trying to get revenge on him. Sheila found herself at a loss for words, glancing at Ashton to gauge his reaction.
In that moment, her frustration boiled over. She silently wished she could deliver a sharp rebuke to her foolish brother.
Was her previous message not clear enough?
Phillip had been bested by Ashton on numerous occasions. When would he learn from his repeated failures?
Ashton calmly sipped his coffee, and then reached over to Sheila’s phone and muted the microphone.
He turned to Sheila, offering a slight smile. “Your brother continues to challenge me despite his many defeats. Does he have a penchant for failure?”
Sheila, flustered, shook her head quickly and replied anxiously, “Mr. Baldwin, surely you jest. Phillip is merely young and acts without thinking. Please, do not take his actions to heart!”
Ashton responded with a scoff, “I have warned you before that Phillip’s recklessness could endanger the Watson family’s reputation. However, I do value your professional capabilities.”
Sheila clearly understood that Ashton was pressing her to choose a side.
She had worked hard to achieve her position and refused to let Phillip’s indiscretions jeopardize her career.
With a tremor in her voice, Sheila clenched her teeth and said, “Mr. Baldwin, rest assured, my loyalty lies with you. Just give the command, and I will sever ties with him immediately!”
