Chapter 491
Chapter 491:
Rayden gently patted his daughter on the head and spoke to her in a tone filled with seriousness and concern. “What Mr. Baldwin said holds much truth. Don’t always rely on me to extricate you from difficult situations. You must understand that people are complex and unpredictable. If you don’t heed this, it will truly worry me, especially with your career in law enforcement looming.”
Alisha, reasonable as ever, felt a sting from her father’s words but recognized their validity. She pouted slightly and nodded in silent agreement.
After a few brief exchanges, Ashton chose to keep the conversation light. With many passersby within earshot, he feared the wrong ears might catch wind of something sensitive.
So, he confirmed his attendance at Rayden’s upcoming birthday party, quickly bid farewell, and departed.
Rayden, understanding the need for discretion, didn’t press Ashton to stay longer. After watching him leave, he and Alisha proceeded to escort Nikolas to the police station.
At the Carter family estate, Ashton pushed open the door and entered their temporary residence, where the Campbell sisters were already back, watching TV in the living room.
Noticing Ashton’s return, Selena squinted and nudged Rosalie with a mischievous look.
Rosalie, blushing, quickly pulled Selena back to their room. Ashton found the interaction puzzling but soon surmised that Selena was likely engaging in her usual playful antics, prodding Rosalie into mischief.
With a slight smile, Ashton wasn’t too concerned. Seeing Selena’s lively spirit was reassuring.
Nevertheless, Ashton had more urgent issues to deal with and wasn’t in the mood for lighthearted exchanges. After retreating to his room, Ashton waited all night. By dawn, he still had not heard from Milena confirming her safety.

His messages to her remained unanswered, which was uncharacteristic of Milena, who was usually reliable. A sense of dread began to build within him—something must have gone wrong with her investigation!
Prepared for such an eventuality, Ashton decided against inaction.
After briefing the Campbell sisters, he quickly departed from the Carter family estate.
Disguised with a baseball cap and a mask to hide his identity, Ashton drove directly to the secluded warehouse where he was supposed to meet Milena.
The warehouse was located in a demolition zone in the old part of Staville. Most of the original residents had moved out, leaving the area empty and neglected. Only a few unidentified individuals and homeless drifters lingered in the abandoned buildings.
Upon arriving, Ashton felt several hostile stares from hidden figures in the crumbling structures.
This time, Ashton had come in an unremarkable delivery truck, opting against the conspicuous Maserati sports car he used the day before.
As he got out, several figures appeared from the buildings, seemingly intent on encircling him.
