Chapter 499
Chapter 499:
Nonetheless, Ashton refused to see this as a hopeless situation. The poison would take some time to fully manifest its effects, and as long as Milena’s vital signs remained stable, he held onto the belief that he could save her.
With this thought, Ashton let out a temporary sigh of relief.
He then noticed that Milena’s clothes were torn at the hem. Clearly, she had sensed the threat of the gas early and acted quickly, tearing her clothes to cover her nose and mouth, which had spared her from inhaling too much of the lethal fumes.
“Mr. Baldwin, I am grateful to you for risking your life to save me,” Milena murmured, her voice weak and fleeting, as if she had expended all her remaining strength.
Ashton shook his head and replied, “It’s not too late to thank me when you get better. Don’t talk now; I’ll find a way to get you out of here.”
Milena looked at him with gratitude and nodded firmly.
While Ashton was carefully assessing Milena’s condition, the team leader of the masked men, who Ashton had previously knocked out and assumed to be unconscious, seized the opportunity to rise quickly and flee through another passage. Ashton knew this man intended to return with reinforcements. Holding Milena in his arms made pursuit impossible, so he had no choice but to leave before the man could summon help.
However, not long after the team leader’s escape, a desperate and pathetic scream reverberated through the sewers—it was the scream of the team leader who had just fled.
Ashton’s brow furrowed when he heard the scream—a foreboding sensation surged within him. Almost instantly, a vast green mist erupted from the passage entrance and rapidly advanced toward them.
The organization’s leader, in a merciless bid to eliminate both Ashton and Milena, had evidently decided to sacrifice even his own subordinates.

As the toxic cloud neared, Ashton had no time to ponder the cruelty of their situation. He quickly hoisted Milena onto his back and retreated the way they had come.
Fortunately, their escape route remained clear; the chaos had prevented any reinforcements from blocking their path.
As the poison spread, the masked individuals on the ground began to scream. The sewers transformed into a cacophony of terror, the desperate cries echoing through the cramped space. Ashton, with Milena secured, gritted his teeth and dashed toward the exit, driven by sheer determination.
In the heart-stopping moments as the poisonous gas nearly consumed the entire sewer network, Ashton made a desperate leap. He burst out of the sewer outlet and resolutely sealed the entrance behind them, narrowly escaping a gruesome fate.
Although Ashton deeply longed to lead his team directly into the enemy’s lair, concealed within the depths of the sewers, the current circumstances held him back. Poisonous gases permeated the area, and the underground passageways were a labyrinth of complexity, riddled with the enemy’s meticulously set traps and deceptions.
Therefore, Ashton was compelled to temporarily suspend the handling of the masked men due to the lack of detailed and accurate intelligence.
