Chapter 585:

Seeing Alisha support his reasoning, Zane felt smug, a mocking glint in his eyes.

“Alright then! If you claim he’s not the culprit, show me the evidence. Don’t just act superior out of ignorance!” Zane sneered.

Ashton glanced at Zane, let out a cold snort, and replied, “Your so-called reasoning is full of holes. Since you’re so eager to know, I’ll lay out the reasons one by one. First, dry ice isn’t actual ice. It doesn’t melt into water, so it couldn’t have made the scene this humid. Secondly, although dry ice is colder than regular ice, it dissipates slowly and can’t cause an abrupt drop in temperature unless it directly contacts the skin. It certainly wouldn’t result in hypothermia. Your so-called evidence doesn’t hold up.”

Alisha’s eyes lit up with realization. “Of course! Now that you mention it, I recall that dry ice isn’t true ice; it’s solid carbon dioxide. If the victims truly died from dry ice, the cause should have been carbon dioxide poisoning, leading to suffocation—not freezing to death as it seems.”

Ashton nodded, pleased with her understanding, and pressed on. “Speaking of the cause of death, although the family of three was dressed in down jackets, they didn’t freeze to death.” With that, he crouched beside one of the victims, gently lifting the clothing to reveal skin that had lost its color.

“If they’d died from exposure to low temperatures, their bodies would have failed to retain warmth, leading to tissue necrosis and frostbite,” Ashton explained.

“Yet, my examination shows their skin is smooth, with no signs of cold exposure. This rules out freezing as the cause. Zane’s reasoning and evidence are completely baseless!”

The policemen exchanged uneasy glances, now processing Ashton’s explanation.

They hadn’t overlooked these details entirely, but Zane’s confident demeanor had made them subconsciously accept his flawed conclusions.

Rayden, who had been watching Zane with approval, now wore a strained expression.

Noticing the shift in the room, Zane’s smugness twisted into anger, his face flushed with frustration.

When he saw Alisha’s attention returning to Ashton, Zane’s anxiety grew.

“What right do you have to question my reasoning? How can you prove you’re not just talking nonsense?” Zane retorted through gritted teeth.

Ashton smiled calmly. “Because I’m a doctor, I can determine the cause of death. I may not be a policeman or detective, but the unique circumstances surrounding the victims’ deaths have allowed me to identify the true murderer.”

Curious, Alisha quickly interjected, “Ashton, if you already knew, why didn’t you tell us sooner? Did you really have to keep us in suspense?”

Ashton chuckled, shrugged, and replied, “I wanted to see how capable the renowned Captain Zane Paige truly was. The result, however, was… disappointing. Even the murderer probably didn’t expect such amateurish reasoning.”

The face of Lamont, the private doctor who had been silently observing their exchange, suddenly turned pale. As Ashton spoke, he turned his sharp gaze directly toward Lamont, making his implication unmistakable.
