Chapter 628:

Rayden’s eyes darkened, his expression a mixture of betrayal and fury. “I treated you like my own son, Zane, and this is how you repay me? All these years, I was raising a snake,” he said, his voice heavy with disappointment.

The facade of fear melted from Zane’s face, replaced by a cold, calculating stare. Yet, a flicker of defiance still lingered in his eyes. He turned to Ashton, asking with a mix of bitterness and curiosity, “Why are you here? Did you suspect me all along?”

Ashton shook his head slowly. “I had my doubts about your achievements, but I never linked you to the Dark Night Organization. It was your own slip-up that gave you away. Last night, when I confronted Craig, all I did was grab his clothes and pin him to the chair. I never laid a hand on him beyond that. Yet you claimed to have found my fingerprints all over him. And here’s the real kicker, I’ve never submitted my fingerprints to the police database. Even if you genuinely suspected me, you’d have needed to collect my prints first to compare. But somehow, the moment I arrived, you miraculously produced a fingerprint comparison report. That’s when I knew your so-called evidence was a setup, carefully crafted to frame me.”

Rayden nodded, stepping forward. “When we orchestrated the raid on Fraser, only a select few were privy to that intel. If any outsiders were aware, it had to be you, the criminal police captain assigned to assist us. That was when Ashton started watching you closely. And when you fabricated evidence to pin Craig’s murder on him, even I had my suspicions confirmed.”

Rayden continued, his voice tinged with betrayal, “We used this operation to draw you out, exposing you as the mole who had infiltrated our ranks for years.”

At this point, Ashton couldn’t help but glance down at Alisha, who was still clinging to his arm, her eyes full of confusion and hurt. He let out a heavy sigh and then said to Zane, “I planned to assign someone to quietly track your movements to figure out what you were up to. But Alisha was too insistent on being involved. Her determination threw a wrench into my plans. In the end, her unintentional actions pushed you to show your hand sooner than expected. If it weren’t for Alisha, we might not have exposed you so easily, Zane.”

Alisha’s expression hardened as she processed his words. “So all this time, you were playing me for a fool?” she snapped.

Ashton offered a rueful smile. “I never wanted you to be part of this, Alisha. But your stubbornness turned the tide in our favor. In a way, you were instrumental in bringing him down.”

Alisha’s anger softened, replaced by a faint smile. “As long as you’re safe,” she murmured, her eyes glistening with relief.

Meanwhile, Zane’s expression shifted from desperation to something darker. He was drenched in sweat, his mind racing for a way out.

Ashton noticed and, with a steely glare, asked, “Have you anything else to say?”

Zane hesitated, swallowing hard. A desperate flicker of hope crossed his eyes as he tried to salvage the situation.

Forcing a strained smile, he turned to Rayden. “Mr. Smith, listen, I know I’ve made some terrible mistakes, but I can still be useful. Give me a chance to prove it. I can give you everything I know about the Dark Night Organization, their hideouts, their leaders, all of it.”

His words came faster, spilling out like a lifeline he was trying desperately to cling to. “And I know who really killed Craig. That’s why I came here tonight, to destroy the key evidence they left behind. If you let me walk away, I’ll…” But suddenly, Zane’s voice faltered.
