Chapter 649
Chapter 649:
Ashton held the vial closer, letting the scent waft gently up to his nose. “The smell is bitter-sweet and slightly pungent. It is similar to the irritating odor of sulfur. But when I smell it carefully, there’s a strong fragrance,” he muttered. He tried to lick the toxin to taste it.
However, Ashton’s rigorous training and countless medicinal concoctions had fortified his immune system to handle toxins most would consider deadly. So, these toxins, which were fatal to ordinary people, had little effect on him.
But after licking it, he suddenly felt a strange taste in his mouth. It had a fishy, briny taste similar to seafood. There was also a hint of spiciness. He felt a subtle warmth spreading across his tongue. It was as if flooding his senses and distracting him.
Ashton closed his eyes and savored it for a moment. Finally, he remembered that he seemed to have seen a record of this flavor in an unknown medical manuscript his mentor had once shown him.
This poison was called the Despair Cycle.
He rejoiced at this discovery, but it was only for a brief moment. Not long after, he began to feel troubled.
Back then, when Ashton looked through the medical manuscript, his mentor did not allow him to read everything, citing his limited medical expertise. So, he didn’t know the antidote or its preparation method.
But this also gave Ashton an idea. Since his mentor’s medical manuscript recorded this toxin, his mentor might already know the antidote. Or, at the very least, have access to a detailed method of counteracting it.
He didn’t want to contact his mentor, but he had no choice. At the thought of the current situation, he could only grit his teeth and reluctantly dial the number of his mentor, Gustave Welch.
When the call was answered, a deep voice, gravelly with age but still authoritative, exclaimed in surprise, “Oh, my God! Ashton, I didn’t expect you to still remember me.”

“Mr. Welch, how can you say that? Of course, I always keep you in my heart,” Ashton said, laughing awkwardly.
Gustave said unhappily, “Bah! You haven’t contacted me in the past three years. I almost thought you died out there.”
Ashton chuckled awkwardly, trying to mask the tension in his voice. Then, he tried exchanging pleasantries with Gustave.
When he noticed Gustave’s tone had softened, he asked casually, “By the way, Mr. Welch, do you remember the poison called the Despair Cycle?”
Gustave was obviously displeased by Ashton’s question. “You brat! You only took the initiative to contact me now because you’ve run into that poison and got stuck, right?” Ashton chuckled, not denying it.
Gustave said earnestly, “No, it can’t be. This toxin’s formula should have been lost to the outside world by now. How could you have encountered it? Something’s not right!”
Ashton wanted to ask more, but before he could say anything, Gustave proactively told him how to counter the Despair Cycle.
Finally, Gustave added, “Now that I’ve told you how to make the antidote, I want you to do me a favor. Find the people who made this poison and capture them alive. Then, interrogate them thoroughly. I need to know how they got the formula. As far as I know, no one except me can refine this long-lost poison. If someone has taught them the recipe, it’s a serious problem.”
