When Stephen arrived at the Axe Gang’s nightclub, Slater and Roger were already outside, waiting for him.
The father and son remembered how much they owed Stephen. Without his support during their darkest days, the Axe Gang might not have risen to its current prominence.
With that in mind, the two greeted Stephen with respect. They led him to a plush VIP room, where they offered him a cigarette and even lit it for him, treating him like an honored guest. Stephen felt some of his tension ease under their courteous treatment.
After a moment of silence, Slater broke the ice, his tone casual yet curious. “Mr. Crawford, what happened? We’ve been away from Staville for only two months. Who’s giving you trouble this time?”
Stephen took a slow drag from his cigarette, his frustration evident in the way he exhaled. “You wouldn’t believe it, this guy named Ashton Baldwin. I’ve been running things in Staville for years, and I’ve never been humiliated like this before. I need your help to take him down.”
Before Stephen could elaborate, Slater and Roger exchanged uneasy glances when they heard Ashton’s name.
“Wait, you mean Ashton, the head of Skyline Group’s Staville branch?” Roger asked cautiously.
“Of course. I take it you’ve heard of him. He must’ve built a reputation in Inewood. Not that it matters; he’s about to lose everything,” Stephen replied, his tone smug.
Slater’s expression darkened instantly, his easygoing demeanor vanishing. Roger, sensing the tension, quickly attempted to smooth things over. Speaking with calm but firm politeness, he said, “I’m really sorry, but we can’t help you with that. We truly appreciate everything you’ve done for us in the past, but this time, we can’t get involved. If you’ll take my advice, you’d do well to steer clear of Ashton.”
Stephen’s initial anger had begun to subside, but hearing their reaction to Ashton’s name made him pause. A flicker of confusion crossed his face, soon replaced by a renewed surge of irritation.

His voice rose as he snapped, “You’re saying you can’t help me? I haven’t even told you what I need yet, and you’re already turning me down?”
Slater didn’t flinch at Stephen’s outburst. His voice was steady, his words deliberate. “It doesn’t matter what you’re planning. We’re not getting involved. If that’s all you came for, you should leave.”
Stephen’s temper flared. Slamming his fist on the table, he leaned forward, his glare sharp and accusatory. “Are you serious, Slater? After everything I’ve done for you and the Axe Gang, this is how you repay me? If it weren’t for my help back then, the Axe Gang would’ve been wiped out! You wouldn’t even have the guts to sit in the same room as me!”
Slater wasn’t going to take that kind of disrespect. After hearing those words, he rose from his seat and delivered a stinging slap across Stephen’s face. The force of it made Stephen stagger, his hand flying to his cheek as he stared at Slater in stunned disbelief.
“You want the truth? Fine. I’ll spell it out for you. The Ashton you’re so eager to take down? He’s my boss now. So don’t test my limits, Stephen. If it weren’t for the history between us, I’d have dealt with you already, ripped you apart, and fed what’s left to the fish. Be smart for once in your life. Get out of here while you still can.”
