Chapter 767:

Pushing Stephen aside, Red Jack crouched down, leaning in close to Ashton with a cruel smirk. “I knew from the very beginning you were this kind of fool. Just the mere idea of Stephen’s treasures putting the people of Staville at risk was enough to drag you here without hesitation, wasn’t it? The gas—oh, I crafted that specially for you. Feeling honored? Do you remember when I told you your foolish sense of kindness would one day lead to your ruin? Well, here we are!”

Ashton let out a bitter, icy laugh. Summoning what little strength he had left, he raised his hand, aiming to slap Red Jack. But to Red Jack, Ashton’s feeble motion was agonizingly slow, like watching syrup drip from a jar. With ease, Red Jack caught Ashton’s hand once more, his grip unyielding.

“Don’t even think about trying to hit us. You might just live a few minutes longer if you behave,” Red Jack said jeeringly. “You’ll get what’s coming to you sooner or later!”

Ashton spat through gritted teeth, his anger flaring.

Red Jack let out a cold, dismissive chuckle. “I don’t mind, as long as ‘sooner or later’ isn’t right now.”

Ashton suddenly guffawed. “Don’t be so sure about that.”

Red Jack’s smirk deepened into one of pure contempt. “You really think you can threaten me when you’re barely hanging on?”

Before Ashton could muster a reply, Red Jack raised his foot and drove it forcefully into Ashton’s chest.

The impact sent Ashton slamming back against the wall with a sickening thud. Blood spilled from his mouth as his body shuddered uncontrollably. Moments later, his strength gave out, and he collapsed into unconsciousness.

Stephen’s eyes remained locked on Ashton’s limp body sprawled on the floor. Even though Ashton had collapsed in what seemed to be a dead faint, Stephen’s wariness didn’t waver. His mind raced with suspicion; what if Ashton was faking it, waiting for the perfect moment to strike back?

However, Red Jack chuckled, his confidence oozing as he casually waved off Stephen’s concerns. “Relax, the dose of toxic gas he inhaled could bring down a hundred head of cattle. Even if he is rushed to a hospital, it’s already too late. Besides, he’s on your turf now. Who could possibly save him here?”

Stephen mulled over Red Jack’s words and then gave a small nod of agreement. Ashton was deep within his estate, far from anyone who could intervene. The odds of survival were nonexistent.

As the realization sank in, Stephen’s pent-up fury erupted. He threw back his head and laughed, his voice echoing through the spacious vault.

But laughter wasn’t enough to satisfy him. He stormed over to Ashton’s lifeless form and delivered two swift kicks to his side. His voice was low and seething as he growled, “I gave you a chance, Ashton. A way out. But you spit on it. Now, it’s too late for regrets. This is what you get for daring to cross me!”

Nearby, Red Jack gazed at Ashton’s dying figure, a flicker of disappointment flashing across his face.

To him, Ashton had been more than an adversary; he’d been a challenge, one who’d reignited a long-dormant thrill.
