Chapter 146

Renee clutched her stomach, frantically stumbling backward, but the man’s gaze was locked on her and he stabbed at her with brutal force.

“Blake, help me! Blake, please, help me!” Renee screamed, her voice shaking with terror.

Blake lowered his gaze, something flickering in his eyes–but the knife got past him in a flash, plunging straight into Renee’s shoulder.

The mall security rushed in and quickly wrestled the attacker to the ground.

The man, hidden beneath a hat and mask, stared at Renee with manic intensity, laughing hysterically like a total psychopath.

Renee trembled, unable to meet that crazed gaze. Blood covered her from head to toe as she screamed, and a puddle of yellow fluid spread beneath her on the floor.

The crowd was evacuated in minutes, and the police stormed in, arresting the man on the spot.

Renee was badly injured, and on the way to the hospital, she gripped Blake’s hand tight, like it was the only thing keeping her alive.

“Blake, don’t leave me. Stay with me, please… I need you,” Renee pleaded, her voice trembling.

She’d just seen Blake put his life on the line to protect her, and right now, sticking close to him felt like the only safe place in the world.

In moments like this, that whole “suspension bridge effect” thing was in full force–her love for him hit an all- time high.

All she wanted was Blake.

The emergency treatment kept going for more than two hours before the doctors finally finished stitching up her wounds.

May burst into the hospital room and, when she saw Renee lying pale and frail in bed, her anger boiled over -she couldn’t help but start cursing out loud.

“That bastard is going to rot in prison for the rest of his life! Have you found out who he is yet? Why the hell would he go after Renee? Was it someone trying to get back at the Sinclair family?!” May shouted furiously.

Charles and Jack arrived just then.

Jack bowed his head respectfully. “We’ve tracked him down. The guy’s name is Greg Guffman. His wife, Megan, was pregnant, but after Renee attacked her in that hotel, she ended up miscarrying. He wanted revenge for what happened to his wife and their baby.”

May’s face twisted with anger, and for a second she was at a loss for words. Then she clenched her jaw and spat out, “His wife survived, but he still tried to kill Renee? Seriously, how messed up can you be? He deserves to rot behind bars for the rest of his damn life! And as for his wife–find out where she is, toss her out of

Jack added, “Someone stepped in to protect Rence–Blake Alston, her first love. If he hadn’t literally taken two stabs for her, Rence might not have made it out alive. And get this–the doctors say Renee’s pregnant! Turns out these two have actually been together lately”

May stared in shock, her eyes practically popping out. “Blake? You mean that wild street racer–the bad boy from back then?”

Charles stood off to the side, frowning. “Mom, just stay here with Rence at the hospital. Don’t worry, I’ll

handle the rest.”

May sat by the bedside, completely drained of color. “Sure, he took a knife for Renee, but that doesn’t mean he’s good enough for her. Just toss some cash his way and get rid of him. Wasn’t he the one you booted out years ago? Who knows when those two started talking again. And Renee–what is she thinking, messing around with someone like that?”

She sighed, shaking her head and muttering to herself, “Honestly–what a mess. And now she’s even ended up pregnant.”

Without another word, Charles and Jack headed out.

It wasn’t long before Blake was forcibly hauled off to another estate owned by Charles.

The bodyguard slammed his knee so hard that Blake was forced down to his knees. His wounds had only just been bandaged, and his face was drained of all color–he looked like he might pass out any second.

Charles sat on the sofa, his tone flat. “Talk. How did you end up back here? From what I remember, things were pretty rough for you over there.”

Blake winced, his knees throbbing. After a long pause, he finally said, “I missed Renee. When I left, she was heartbroken.”

Charles smirked but said nothing.

The bodyguard suddenly slammed his boot into Blake’s chest, making him spit out a mouthful of blood.

“Blake, you’ve been overseas for three years. I gave you that money, and you spent it all on your brother’s medical bills. After that, you were just barely surviving. So tell me–is coming back just your way of trying to squeeze money out of Renee?” Charles said, his voice full of cold cynicism.

“Mr. Sinclair, I never asked Renee for any money. Not once,” Blake replied firmly, looking Charles straight in the eye.

The money Yolanda sent him had been wired into an overseas friend’s account–something Charles’s people just couldn’t trace.

So all Charles’s investigators could find was that Blake truly hadn’t touched a penny from Renee. On the contrary, he’d even spent what little he had to buy her some gifts.

They were cheap, sure–but for whatever reason, they actually made Renee happy. She really believed his

Charles didn’t buy for a second that someone poor like Blake could actually feel something as real as love for a rich girl like Renee. In his eyes, all that “true love” talk was just a lame excuse–a guy like Blake was obviously hoping to hitch his sorry life to a golden ticket and score big.

“You took a knife for Rence, and sure, maybe I ought to thank you. But if you hadn’t brought her along in the first place, none of this would’ve happened. So don’t expect any favors. You leave the country tonight–and don’t bother coming back,” Charles ordered, his voice icy.

Blake’s eyes dropped, his whole frame curling in on itself–he nearly coughed up another mouthful of blood.

Charles didn’t spare him a glance. He strode forward, grinding the thin sole of his shoe right onto Blake’s hand. “Don’t get greedy. That’s not yours to take.”

Blake suddenly let out a harsh laugh, his eyes burning red. “Mr. Sinclair, I’ve said it before–I genuinely love Renee. Maybe you’ve never loved anyone, so you just can’t get it. I know I’m no match for you; you want me gone, I’ll leave. But don’t you dare tarnish what I feel for her.”

Charles narrowed his eyes, unable to figure out whether Blake was actually genuine or just putting on a show.

He let out a low chuckle. “Suit yourself.”

Charles scoffed inwardly, ‘True love… what a pathetic fantasy. Only idiots would buy into something that cheap.‘

He walked straight outside and climbed into his car without even pausing, a strange wave of irritation pulsing through him for no clear reason.

Just then, his phone buzzed–it was May calling.

“Charles, Renee’s awake and she’s insisting on seeing Blake. The baby’s okay, but you didn’t mess with Blake or anything, right?” May said, her voice anxious.

Charles leaned back, keeping his tone gentle. “Come on, what do you think I did to him? He’s alive, isn’t he?”

May finally breathed out in relief–Renee had been sobbing and screaming nonstop, totally losing it, all because she just wanted Blake.

May was at her wits‘ end. “Just bring Blake over, will you? She seriously thinks you killed him. If she doesn’t see him with her own eyes, she’s never going to stop crying–she’s even threatening to throw herself out the window!”

May was so terrified that she ended up calling Charles for help.

Charles felt his frustration boiling over. These days, it was like nothing ever went his way.

He ordered his men to bring Blake over, then took the tablet from Jack. The screen showed video of Renee beating up Megan–raw, brutal footage that made everything crystal clear.

Yolanda was the one who brought Megan to the hotel.

Chapter 146.

Jack explained, “Megan’s husband, Greg, was buried in debt, and Yolanda only covered those bills out of sympathy for Megan. Last night, Megan couldn’t find Greg and got scared the debt collectors would show up so she called Yolanda for help. Yolanda dropped her off at the hotel lobby and left right away. Everything after that is caught on security footage—Greg got roughed up by loan sharks, and when he found out about the miscarriage, he went after Rence for revenge.”

Yolanda barely had any part in all this, which honestly made sense given her position.

Even after Greg had crossed her before, she still chose to let it go–for Megan’s sake. That just showed how much she truly valued Megan as a friend.

Charles dialed Yolanda’s number.

Yolanda picked up, her voice a bit raspy. “Hey, hubby.”

Charles hesitated for a moment, then asked, “Are you home yet?”

“Yeah,” Yolanda replied softly.

Charles had a meeting scheduled for tonight, but he canceled it on the spot and told Jack to drive him straight home.

As soon as he stepped into the lobby, one of the servants approached him. “Mrs. Sinclair didn’t eat dinner tonight. She seems really upset.”

Charles had already made sure the hotel refused to release the footage of Renee beating up Megan. Even if Yolanda wanted to get to the bottom of what happened to Megan’s baby, there was no way she’d ever find out.

Plus, Megan didn’t even know who Renee was.

Little did he know, Blake had already told Yolanda everything.

He walked into Yolanda’s room and found her lying in bed, just resting.

He switched on the bedside lamp and noticed her lashes were damp. “Have you been crying?” he asked softly.

“Megan lost her baby. I still couldn’t figure out who was behind it. And I can’t even reach her husband. They were supposed to go back to their hometown and try to start over,” Yolanda said, her voice trembling.

Charles was quiet for a few seconds, then gently ruffled her hair. “That’s just fate.”

Yolanda’s lips twitched, and she buried her face deeper into the blanket.

‘Yeah, that’s just how things go, Yolanda thought bitterly. ‘Greg getting revenge on Renee… Guess that’s fate,

too.’

Those two knife wounds would only make Renee weaker, leaving her delicate as a wilting flower in the wind.

“I’m feeling awful, hubby. I just wanna lie down for a bit,” Yolanda whispered.

“Sleep, babe. Hubby’s right here with you,” Charles said, his tone gentle and soothing.
