Shanley's gaze shifted from Juniper's face down to her perfectly flat stomach.

The most they had done were incredibly restrained kisses and holding hands.

"What baby?"

Shanley clenched his fists. His dark, profound eyes stared intensely at Juniper, his voice so hoarse and trembling it was barely a whisper. "Where did a baby come from?"

"Celine's."

Juniper looked down at the ruined cake on the floor, feeling a pang of loss as she grumbled, "Shanley, you owe me a new cake!"

"The baby is Celine's?"

Shanley's tense nerves snapped instantly, cold sweat practically beading on his forehead.

Even though he knew it was impossible, hearing those words nearly gave him a heart attack.

"It's not even the size of an apple seed yet, safely tucked in her stomach." Juniper's tone was light and joyful. "In nine months, I get to hold a soft, squishy little baby."

Shanley let out a long breath, a helpless smile tugging at his lips. "The cake is ruined. Let's go buy you a new one."

"You aren't working?"

Juniper asked, confused, as he pulled her toward the door. "Everyone knows Mr. Schwartz is incredibly busy."

"Mr. Schwartz doesn't want to be busy right now..." He didn't dare say the rest out loud.

He was afraid she wouldn't get it.

And equally afraid that if she did get it, she'd shoot him on the spot.

Juniper clearly didn't get the innuendo, simply nodding, assuming he had made enough money for the day.
