Richard gave his shoulder a quick rub, feeling tingling from where she’d been leaning against him. “My shoulder’s kind of

sore.”

Sophia was instantly alarmed. Not caring about whether it was too intimate, she reached out and pressed down on his

shoulder. “Here? Is it sore here?”

“No, move in a little closer,” Richard replied.

Sophia inched her fingers toward his neck and pressed gently. “Here?”

“A bit lower,” he said.

Sophia obediently moved her fingers a bit lower, pressing against a sleek layer of muscle that felt surprisingly springy.

It was as if a jolt of electricity zipped from her fingertips, making her whole arm buzz with a warm, light numbness. Sophia forced herself not to let her thoughts run wild, but she couldn’t help the heat rising to the tips of her ears.

‘I really had ended up sleeping on Richard’s shoulder. But I was sure we’d been playing chess. When on earth did he slide over right next to me?‘ Sophia thought to herself.

And what was he thinking, letting me use him as a pillow?‘ she wondered with a mix of embarrassment and confusion.

As she zoned out, Sophia’s fingers kept moving down until she ended up pressing against Richard’s chest muscle. Richard, noticing her hand getting bolder, finally cleared his throat to break the moment.

“Sophia, do you even know where your hand’s wandering?” He teased.

This was the first time he used that tone with her, and Sophia snapped to attention. Seeing her hand nearly on his chest, her cheeks flushed instantly.

“Sorry, I swear I zoned out.” Sophia stammered, her voice flustered.

She really didn’t want Richard to get the wrong idea. No way she’d try to make a move on him, not even if he gave her a

thousand chances.

Seeing her all panicked, Richard just chuckled. “Hey, it’s all good. With a body like mine, I wouldn’t blame you if it was on purpose.”

Sophia was speechless. She jerked her hand back, cheeks blazing, suddenly feeling way too close for comfort.

“It’s getting late. I should head home now. Thanks for today, Mr. Sterling, and sorry for disturbing your rest,” Sophia said. With that, she walked toward the front gate.

Richard stood up and followed behind her, escorting her all the way out to the yard.

Sophia stood next to her car, giving him an apologetic smile. “I’m really sorry about today. I honestly have no idea how I nodded off like that.”

“Take it easy on your way home. Let me know when you get back,” Richard said.

He lowered his eyes, seeing her hair tousled by the breeze, a strand on her cheek. He wanted to tuck it behind her ear but felt it would be too intimate. Instead, he remained still and watched her get into the car.

Sophia started up the car, rolled down the window, and waved at Richard. “I’m heading out, Mr. Sterling.”

“Alright,” Richard replied, stepping back and quietly watching as her car disappeared through the gate.

Hands stuffed in his pockets, Richard lingered by the roadside for a moment, just about to head back to the villa when a slow, ghostly voice drifted up behind him, cutting through the night.

“Mr. Sterling, it’s late. Why didn’t you let Ms. Evans crash here and leave tomorrow?” Jason piped up.

Fortunately, Richard had nerves of steel. Otherwise, Jason’s words would have startled him. He calmly said, “It’s not suitable.”

Sophia only crashed at the Sterling residence before because she was banged up. Now that she was all better, having her stay another night would just feel off.

Jason raised an eyebrow. “What’s the big deal? She’s stayed over before.”

Richard glanced at him without explaining. Before, he could have kept her with a clear conscience, but now his thoughts. were complicated, so he had to keep his distance.

Sophia returned to Cherry Grove and saw Lucas in the courtyard, his face full of resentment and hate. If she weren’t so brave, she would have screamed in fright.

When she got a good look at him, he seriously looked like some vengeful ghost. Sophia frowned, “What, don’t you sleep at midnight?”

Lucas glared at her, his face dark as a storm cloud. “Where the hell have you been?”
