Lucas shot Annabelle a burning glare. “If I weren’t set on never hitting women, I’d have slapped you already.”

Annabelle sneered, “You’ve got some nerve. Which jerk broke Sophie’s three ribs?”

“How dare—” Lucas’s face darkened with rage. He didn’t want anyone to know he’d ever laid a hand on Sophia.

But Annabelle was Sophia’s best friend; she knew better than anyone what Sophia had gone through.

His handsome face flickered with discomfort. “It was an accident. She swung a golf club at Emily, then at me. There’s no rule against men fighting back.”

“Fighting back? You were trying to kill her.” Annabelle’s anger flared. “Do you even know she just had a miscarriage? Lucas, you’ll never understand what you’ve lost.”

Lucas scoffed, “Don’t give me that miscarriage crap. I took her to the doctor. She’ll never be able to have kids. That’s straight from the doctor.”

Annabelle stared at him, feeling completely helpless—as if smacking him across the face a hundred times wouldn’t make a difference.

“Go ahead, and keep deluding yourself. The only way you can sleep at night is by running from the truth and ruining your life,” she said.

She didn’t bother saying another word, just brushed right past him and headed inside.

But Lucas wasn’t about to let Annabelle walk away. He blocked her way, arms outstretched. “Where’s Sophia? I can’t get a hold of her.”

Annabelle gave him a chilling, insincere smile. “Why don’t you take a wild guess?”

Lucas’s eyes blazed. “If I knew, would I even be here? Annabelle, don’t push your luck with me.”

Annabelle snorted, her laugh full of scorn. “Oh, Mr. Westwood, what now, planning to bully us because you think the Quinn family’s got no one left to stand up for us?”

Her words were laced with biting sarcasm, throwing it in Lucas’s face–he only ever laid hands on Sophia because there was no one around to defend her.

Lucas knew the Quinn family had the Sterling family in their corner, especially Annabelle, who, being on her own, seemed extra tight with the Sterling family.

If Lucas laid a finger on her, he’d risk seriously pissing off the Sterling family.

And with Yadel Group up to its neck in problems, now was a really bad time to mess with her.

He jabbed a finger at Annabelle, eyes cold as ice. “Just you wait.”

Then, without another word, he strode into the elevator and was gone.

Annabelle cursed him out quietly as she scanned her fingerprint and let herself in. The more she dwelled on it, the more pissed off she got.

Lucas was such trash.

Clearly, he didn’t care about Sophia at all; if he did, he wouldn’t have gone out of his way to hurt Annabelle like this.

Annabelle could only hope Sophia would crack that formula for skin regeneration soon, then she could finally break free from that bastard for good.

Lucas had barely set foot outside Annabelle’s apartment when his phone rang suddenly. It was the cops calling.

The officers politely requested that he come down to the station to assist with an investigation.

When Lucas arrived, it was the two men he’d instructed to keep tabs on Sophia who’d gotten themselves arrested.

Apparently, they’d been lurking suspiciously outside an industrial park, and the police had pegged them as potential

troublemakers.

After a round of questioning, the two finally came clean; they admitted they were sent by Lucas to protect his wife.

They’d tried calling Sophia, but when she didn’t pick up, they ended up having to call Lucas instead.

Word of this quickly got back to Annabelle, who wasted no time calling Sophia.

“Sophie, Lucas got called down to the station for questioning. He was just at my place, trying to corner you,” Annabelle said.

Sophia, wearing safety goggles and keeping a close eye on her experiment, replied, “Annabelle, I need a favor.”

Annabelle didn’t hesitate. “Please, even if you need a hundred favors–just name it.”

Sophia smiled gently, “Thank you, Annabelle.”

“Seriously, what are friends for? Just tell me–what do you need?” Annabelle replied.

Sophia lowered her voice, quickly told her what to do, and then hung up.

Meanwhile, Lucas was questioned by the cops, but he kept insisting he was just trying to protect his wife.
