The Man Who Destroyed Me Is Now Begging to Mend Me 122

Chapter 122
The lab erupted in cheers. After days of nonstop work, they finally cracked the technical hurdle and completed the formula for skin regeneration.
A group of people crowded around Sophia. “You were amazing, Sophia. There’s no way the formula could have succeeded so quickly without you.”
“It was a team effort. There’s no way I could have done this so fast without all of you,” Sophia said, taking off her goggles and looking at their tired but excited faces.
After days of working together, they built a strong bond.
Linda said, “Sophia’s totally right. This win belongs to all of us–no need to be shy about it.”
“Yeah. Hanging out with you all these past few days got me excited about experiments again.”
“Same here. Before Sophia showed up, the project was dead in the water, and I was bored out of my mind. Now every single day feels alive again.”
Sophia chuckled. “That’s exactly how I feel. Thank you guys for welcoming me like family.”
Her gaze lingered on each of their faces. They were the best and brightest, true geniuses in their fields.
The smarter these guys were, the less likely they would let just anyone join their group, so Sophia earning their trust was seriously impressive.
A couple of the senior teammates cracked a smile. “Sophia, you’ve got real skills. We’re totally on board with you leading the way.”
“Thanks so much, everyone. I’ll keep working hard, and together we’ll tackle even bigger challenges,” Sophia said.
Linda grinned. “Alright, I know everyone’s hyped, but we’ve been grinding for weeks. Let’s head home, take a real shower, and get some decent sleep.”
“Exactly, take a break. Once you’re all charged up, we’ll throw an epic celebration,” Sophia added.
Everyone cheered.
Once the professors and doctors had left, Sophia rubbed her sore back. “Linda, let’s get the data sorted out. Annabelle will be here soon, and we need everything ready to file for the patent.”
When the patent for the formula for skin regeneration finally came through, that would be the day she left Lucas for good.
Linda paused and said, “Sophia, you’ve been working nonstop these past few days. Why don’t you let me finish things up here? Go home and get some rest.”
Sophia shook her head. “No worries. We’ll wrap up quicker if we tackle it together.”

With her gaze lowered, Linda finished up the last bits while stealing glances at Sophia.
Sophia looked worn out after days without sleep, but her eyes still sparkled with energy.

Linda pursed her lips, grabbed a glass, poured some water, and handed it to Sophia. “Sophia, have some water. Your lips are cracking.”
Sophia licked her lips without thinking, instantly catching that taste of blood.
She hadn’t felt it until Linda said something–now her throat felt dry like sandpaper.
She took the glass and gulped down every last drop.
Linda took the glass and headed out.
Sophia kept checking the data, but her eyelids felt impossibly heavy–they kept drifting shut no matter what she did.
The glass slipped from her hand, smashing against the floor and sending shards everywhere.
She collapsed face–down onto the lab table, and through the haze just before she lost consciousness, she caught Linda’s voice, heavy with sobs.
Linda said, “Sophia, I’m so sorry. I know I shouldn’t have tried to steal everyone’s work, but Mr. Westwood threatened my parents and my brother’s future. I have no choice.
“You’re so smart, and I’m sure you’ll create something even greater than the formula for skin regeneration someday. However, my family needs this formula. It’s the only hope we’ve got.”
Sophia struggled with all her strength, trying to reach out to Linda, but the drugs were too powerful–her body wouldn’t respond, and darkness swallowed her up.
Linda wiped her tears away, gave Sophia–still slumped over the table–a cold smile.
