For six years 358
Chapter 358
Following decorum, George should have been seated with Steven.
Yet at this moment, he disregarded his status entirely and sat with Rhea, speaking to her in a gentle, intimate tone.
“You’re not fat.” George scooped some food onto her plate. “You’re skin and bones. Where’s the fat?”
The words drifted faintly into Kate’s ears. She gripped her fork tighter, revealing the faint blue of her veins.
Rhea wasn’t in a very good mood. She said, “Go sit with your father. You don’t need to stay here with me.”
George glanced toward Steven. “He doesn’t need me. He’s busy drinking with old friends.”
He was always someone who knew how to separate life from work. When he wasn’t working, he would focus on his girlfriend. When he was working, he worked seriously.
“Once this busy season ends, I can take a few days off. How about we go somewhere?” George asked.
“Where?” Rhea replied.
“Anywhere you want.”
Maeve sighed dramatically. “Oh, I’m so jealous. Nobody is spending their days off with us.”
“Don’t be bitter. They grew up together, you know. George has finally got the woman of his dreams. He has every right to focus on Rhea.” Evelyn nudged Maeve’s arm.
“Yes, yes, of course!”
Once the banquet began, Liora had little to do and joined Rhea’s table. Valerie sat there as well.
The circle of friends was complete, except for Kate, who remained at the neighboring table, quietly eating her meal.
After the banquet, the Pearson family’s reputation plummeted, forcing them to hold an urgent meeting at home that very night. But at this point, there was little they could do–unless Rhea admitted that the incident that day was merely a misunderstanding.
Evie’s head was pounding. “Even if Rhea agrees, Ruby probably won’t.”
“Where is Kate?”
“She went out.”
“Out where? She rarely goes anywhere. What’s going on with her now?” Connor was visibly annoyed.
At the hospital, Carter hadn’t expected to lock eyes with Kate as soon as he woke up. She stared at him as if he were her enemy.
“Kate? What are you doing here?”
In Kate’s cold gaze, only apparent disdain remained. “I warned you not to tell Rhea what I said, yet you told her everything. You’re really useless.”
Her usual warmth was completely absent.
Carter suddenly smiled. “I actually want to ask, were you lying to me? Did you send me to Rhea just so you could get something out of it?”
Kate shot back, “If you don’t trust me, why did you even agree to meet me?”
“You kept telling me not to tell Rhea what you said. But don’t forget, I shared a bed with Rhea for six years! Could I not tell when she was lying? All the things you told me aren’t real. You tricked me!”
Once Carter calmed down and thought it over, he realized that something was off. He had just been too eager to win Rhea back to think things through.
Kate suddenly smiled and calmly took a seat. “I guess you’re not completely stupid.”
She looked at him. “I’ll be honest. I do have a purpose, but it doesn’t conflict with yours. We share the same goal, which is to separate Rhea and George.”
Carter narrowed his eyes. “You like George?”
Kate said nothing.
Carter sneered. “What’s so good about him?”
Kate shot him a glance, revealing a hint of disgust. “You have dealings with Marcus, but he can offer you little. The Pearson family, however, has extensive connections. I can help you network so you can develop your career in Draventh.”
