Chapter 302
She rummaged through her purse and pulled out a card. "This is for you."
Clifford glanced at the bank card but didn't take it.
"I just sold all the clothes and bags I've never worn, and those cars I never drive," Yesenia explained. "I'm still getting the house appraised, but once it sells, I'll have the buyer deposit the money into this account. The house should go for about eighty million, so with everything else, it'll be around two hundred million. And my acting fees..."
"Yesenia," Clifford cut her off.
She paused, looking at him in confusion. "What?"
Clifford took the card from her hand and tucked it back into her coat pocket. "You don't have to do this."
"Is it not enough?"
He sighed softly and turned to look at the gray horizon. "I don't need it."
"How could you not need it?"
"What kind of person do you think I am?" he asked.
Yesenia couldn't quite say. He wasn't a good person, but he wasn't exactly a bad one either. He was always shrouded in an impenetrable mystery. What drew her to him was his unique aura, that confidence of being in complete control. To put it plainly, he had the air of a powerful man that few women could resist. Just his presence was captivating.
When she remained silent, Clifford turned back to her. "Even if that day really comes, do you think I would need a woman to pay my debts?"
His words, especially the first part, threw her for a loop. What did he mean, 'Even if that day really comes?' Was everything he said before a lie?
"Wh-what do you mean?"
Clifford didn't explain. Instead, he thoughtfully buttoned up her coat for her. "Go home. I'll come see you later."
A jolt of happiness went through Yesenia, and she pushed his confusing words to the back of her mind. "Okay, then. Come early."
"I'll try."
Yesenia pouted, then got into her own car. As she drove off, she stuck her head out the window and waved at him. In truth, she had only.come
to gauge Clifford's attitude
words last night had left her feeling insecure all night. With his reassurance, her heart felt alive again.
Only after Yesenia left did Clifford drive back into the Lambert estate.
The manor was subdued. There were people everywhere, yet a dead silence hung
in the air. He strode into the living room, but it was empty. Without pausing, he went straight upstairs to the study and pushed the door open without knocking.
Wallace Lambert was sitting on the sofa, sipping coffee. He looked far more composed than he had the other day, almost leisurely. Seeing Clifford enter, he let out a short, mocking laugh. "I was starting to think the great Chairman had grown too powerful to care about this humble place. What brings you back?"
Clifford walked over and sat down opposite him. "I have some questions, Dad. I was hoping for your guidance."
Wallace set down his coffee cup and leaned back, looking smug. "You're the Chairman now. If there's something you don't know, what could a retired old man like me possibly know?"
Clifford ignored his sarcasm. "Even a chairman isn't omniscient. He can't possibly know why a father who once valued him would suddenly turn on him. After all, he can't read minds. Wouldn't you agree, Dad?"
Wallace stiffened, his expression souring. "You have the nerve to ask me that? Why don't you start by explaining what happened with Yolanda?" He laughed bitterly poured my heart and soul into
raising you, gave you my shares, and this is how you repay me?l never thought I'd spend so much effort raising such an ungrateful wretch!"
Clifford stared at him, then chuckled softly. "You know that's not what I'm talking about."
