Chapter 249:

I liked my castle to be mysterious.

I frowned as his face finally came into view.

“Who are you?” I asked, bored. “Why haven’t I seen you here?”

“My King, I was posted here alongside other guards last week.”

That’s why.

I hissed in annoyance, striding angrily to my room, the heat of anger boiling in the pit of my stomach. His words only resurrected the pain within me. It reopened a wound that I had tried to bury, causing it to bleed once more.

“Get lost!” I ordered, stretching my fingers toward the door. “Don’t let this happen again. Let this be the last time you say something like this.”

“But… my King…” he stammered, looking at me as though he were about to burst into tears. “I am telling the truth. I will never lie to you. Please, believe me,” he pleaded, bowing deeply.

“I don’t have time for this.” I dismissed him, walking toward my room.

The pain started to engulf me, and I quickened my pace. I wanted to shut myself in my room and cry my eyes out, while trying to think of a suitable punishment for him. How dare he hurt me? How dare he make fun of my past and expect me to smile at him like a fool?

“They are at the west side of the gate. They were denied entry into the premises because one of them, a girl, was sighted and ordered to leave,” he explained, his voice thick with fear. The smell of sweat filled the air as my hand dropped from the doorknob.

He wasn’t bluffing.

“Hold on,” I said, walking into my room and dropping my bag onto the chair. I tried to compose myself before walking back out to face his terrified eyes once more.

“Are you serious?” I asked, walking toward him.

He took a few steps back until his back brushed against the wall. The sound of his heart pounding and our heavy breaths filled the air.

That’s right. Fear me.

“I dare not joke with you if I value my life,” he said, his voice trembling, fear clouding his every word as I closed the distance between us.

Satisfied with his answer, I took a few steps away from him, still pinning him with my curious gaze.

“What are they like?” I asked, swallowing the bile of sadness that stuck in my throat. “What are their names?”

“They are three people—a woman who looks to be in her early twenties, and two men in their late twenties. The men resemble you quite strikingly, but the woman seems more like an acquaintance of theirs. They introduced themselves as Aurora, Devin, and Dax.”

My breath hitched the moment he spoke their names. I froze in shock for a few seconds as I tried to process his words. Were my ears deceiving me?

I could hardly control my breath as it became erratic. The air felt harsh, and I almost choked.

“Where are they?” I bellowed desperately.

“They are outside the West side of the gate. They’re currently being interrogated by the guards.”
