Chapter 88
Chapter 88:
Throwing caution to the wind, I shifted, sitting up on the bed, pulling her stiff body against mine as I buried my face in the softness of her caramel hair, nipping at her and leaving hickeys. She was mine, after all.
A sharp pain shot through my chest as her weight pressed down on me, a warning of the consequences.
But I ignored it, adjusting her position, balancing her between my legs.
The doctor’s warning against sex and lifting heavy objects echoed in my mind, but it was powerless to dispel the rising tension in my body.
Desire spread through me like wildfire, awakening my arousal.
I wanted her—I couldn’t deny it. Despite my fury at her for nearly ending my life, I couldn’t help but melt in her presence.
She had a strange way of dissolving my anger effortlessly, leaving me dizzy with confusion.
Who was she?
How could she do what other women failed to do?
Why had I risked my life for her?
Questions flooded my mind… questions I desperately wished I had answers to.
Without warning, her lips left mine, and an emptiness washed over me.
I pulled her back toward me, grabbing a handful of her hair to bring her face to mine, but she stiffened, pulling away, her body tense in shock.
My teeth clenched at her behavior, and I shot her a warning glare.
“I only came here to apologize,” she began. Her eyes roamed over my body before glistening with tears the moment they landed on the wound plastered across my chest. Guilt clawed at her as she broke into sobs, pulling away from me.

“I’m sorry that I was foolish. I didn’t know what I was thinking,” she cried, burying her head in her palms while her damp hair scattered around her.
Unable to find the right words to ease her, I watched her in silence, admiring the sincerity in her eyes.
“I don’t know why you haven’t punished me; I deserve to die, my King.”
My heart dropped at her words, and I found myself moving closer to her.
I wanted to comfort her, to tell her I wasn’t angry with her, to reassure her that everything would be fine… but my ego held me back.
I parted her wet hair, lifting her chin with my thumb before getting lost in the depth of her captivating eyes.
Like a magnet, I couldn’t look away. Her silver-grey eyes glowed softly, but her heartbeat quickened as she stared into mine.
Her head lowered in shame, her gaze slipping from mine, which left me feeling slightly irritated.
“Look at me,” I commanded, lifting her chin again and inching her face closer to mine. “I want to see it.”
As I gazed into her eyes, I saw a shimmering pool of emotions reflected back at me. My heart ached with a dull pain with each tear that rolled down her cheek. I longed to comfort her, but words failed me, leaving me lost in the beauty of her eyes.
In that vulnerable moment, our gazes locked, and everything else faded away.
