Empire 106
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Ethan chuckled at her words, a deep, warm sound that made Ramona’s heart skip a beat.
“I should get going,” he said, walking to the door. He turned back to look at Ramona, who’d come to see him off. “Thanks for breakfast.”
Ramona nodded. As he turned to leave, she found herself reaching out, her fingers brushing his palm before she let go, almost without thinking.
“I’ll be back tonight,” he added, his tone so natural it was as if this had always been the arrangement.
His gaze lingered on her face for a moment, a trace of longing in his eyes that only faded when he finally stepped out the door and resumed that cool, distant demeanor he wore for the rest of the world.
Once Ethan was gone, Ramona quickly patted her cheeks, trying to snap herself out of it.
No matter how wonderful Ethan was, she couldn’t let herself fall any deeper… She couldn’t lose herself to these feelings.
That afternoon, Jotham got a call and rushed straight to the hospital.
Liliane had suddenly collapsed that morning and had just been rushed to the ER.
By the time Jotham arrived, most of the family was already there. Winnie and Eulalia Holt waited anxiously outside Liliane’s room, and even little Milo had been brought to the hospital by the housekeeper.
“What happened?” Jotham demanded.
He finally got the full story: apparently, Liliane had received a phone call in her room, flew into a rage, and started shouting, “You good–for–nothing!” The shock must’ve been too much for her.
Just then, the doctor stepped out of Liliane’s room.
“She’s out of danger now and awake,” the doctor said. “You’re the family, right? Liliane has a weak heart and high blood pressure. She absolutely cannot get this worked up again. Please, all of you need to be careful.”
The doctor’s warning left everyone a bit bewildered, but as soon as he walked away, Winnie rounded on the housekeeper. “Did you or any of the staff say something to Liliane?”
She had made it clear to everyone: not a word about Brianna ever having stayed at the house. No one was allowed to know!
“It wasn’t me, Madam! I swear, I didn’t say anything-” the housekeeper stammered.
Milo squirmed out of the housekeeper’s grasp and darted over to Jotham. “Dad! Why did you make Ms. Prescott leave? I want her back, I want my mom-”
Before Milo could finish, Jotham seized him by the shoulders and snapped, “Quiet.”
Winnie wasn’t any gentler. She twisted Milo’s wrist, making him cry out in pain.
“You little brat, watch your mouth! If your great–grandmother hears you, I’ll have your hide!”
Winnie had never liked the idea of adoption. If they weren’t blood, they’d never be truly loyal–impossible to control.
Milo burst into tears. Jotham quickly pulled him behind, shielding him. “Mom, he’s just a child. Let it go.”
Just then, a nurse poked her head out. “You can come in now. Liliane wants to see you. But please, whatever you do, don’t upset her.”
Jotham and Winnie exchanged glances. They left Eulalia outside to watch Milo and went in together.
Inside the lavish hospital suite, a sharply dressed man–Liliane’s bodyguard and assistant–stood by her bed. At Liliane’s nod, he bowed and left the room.
“Mom… what happened? What got you so upset?” Winnie asked, carefully setting the gift basket on
the cabinet.
“See for yourself,” Liliane replied, her voice weak but her presence icy. With a flick of her hand, she tossed a manila envelope stuffed with photos right at Jotham.
Jotham barely caught it, his face clouding with anxiety as he tore it open.
Winnie rushed over and snatched the envelope from his hands. “Jotham, what-”
As soon as she caught sight of the woman’s profile in the photos, fury flared in her eyes.
Brianna again!
These weren’t like the ones she’d received last time. They were night shots–Brianna and Jotham getting into a car together, arms linked as they headed into a hospital.
And the date? Just last night.
Only yesterday, Winnie had warned him a thousand times: Stay away from Brianna. And yet here he was, sneaking around with her behind their backs.
Before Liliane could say a word, Winnie slapped Jotham hard across the face.
“That wretched woman just won’t leave the Holt family alone! Where is she? If you won’t give up, then I’ll make sure she does once and for all!”
Winnie demanded, but Jotham said nothing. He just stood there, red–faced and silent, unable to defend himself.
It wasn’t until Winnie stormed toward the door that he grabbed her arm. “Mom, this is my fault. If you’re angry, take it out on me.”
“Take it out on you? What’s that supposed to mean?” Liliane’s voice was cold as ice. “Are you ready to defy your grandfather’s will, throw away everything the Holt family stands for, divorce Ramona, and
run off with that old woman?”
Liliane let out a bitter laugh.
The news had almost killed her earlier, but now she was perfectly calm. If she were gone, who knew how happy Brianna would be? Thɪs chapter is updated by findnovel.net
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
