This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

But to Brianna’s surprise, Jotham gently moved Milo aside, determined to leave.

“Milo, be good. Daddy has work to do. Go find your mom, okay?”

“Jotham, do you really not want to be with me anymore?” Brianna’s voice rose, heedless of the staff nearby. “You never used to treat me this coldly. Is it true what they say? That people only want what they can’t have?”

Her anger boiled over, tears pooling in her eyes, heavy with hurt and resentment. “Jotham!”

Just then, Griffin stepped through the front door. He paused at the

staircase, catching fragments of their argument. Brianna and Milo stood close to Jotham, who was clutching his coat, clearly set on leaving. Griffin quickly took in the scene.

“It’s late. Where are you going?” Griffin’s tone was firm, but not unkind. “Brianna told me you had a headache. Are you feeling any better?”

“I’m much better,” Jotham replied quietly, lowering his gaze. “There’s still work waiting for me at the office. I lost a whole day and need to check in.” “Work can wait a day. Your health comes first, and so do

es not worrying your family.”

Griffin’s voice was calm but carried a rare, gentle warmth, despite the exhaustion etched into his features. He’d spent the entire day at the office–hectic as always–but there had been a bright spot: investors from Covington Group had agreed to meet with them next week.

The last thing Griffin wanted was for Jotham to stir up trouble now, especially with Brianna.

Jotham opened his mouth to protest, but before he could speak, Griffin told the housekeeper to lock the door and asked Jotham to join him in

the study for a talk.

Brianna understood that Griffin was trying to help her. She shot him a grateful look and swiftly took Jotham’s coat from his hands.

By the time Jotham emerged from the study, night had fallen completely. He stood outside the bedroom, reluctant to go in.

Holt Group was on the verge of its best days yet. With Covington Group’s partnership on the horizon, they could be going public in a matter of months. The business side of his life was finally falling into place, yet that only meant he’d have to face his personal life. ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ Find1Novel.net

He used to think he’d hold out with Brianna until the family relented, until his career was secure… but now that moment was finally here, he didn’t feel the triumph he’d expected.

Ramona was no longer useful to the company, but she was still, in name, his wife, and she still loved him so much.

To tear off the mask now, to leave her in such a cruel, final way…

She’d hate him for it, wouldn’t she?

Jotham used to think about this with guilt, but never with real doubt. Whatever happened to Ramona, all of his gratitude and love belonged to Brianna. Being with Brianna was worth whatever sacrifice it took.

But somewhere along the way, Ramona’s presence had crept into his life and settled there, making it harder and harder to let go.

Jotham finally stepped into the bedroom and took a shower. When he emerged, Brianna was in the middle of changing clothes–maybe on purpose, maybe not–trying on several new, lacy sets of lingerie, each more provocative than the last.

Despite himself, Jotham lingered in the doorway for a moment before crossing the room and pulling her into his arms, kissing her deeply. He trailed kisses from her neck downward, burying his face against her chest.

Brianna tilted her head back, at first pretending to resist, pushing at his shoulders, but she quickly melted into his embrace.

But then, in the dim light, Jotham’s eyes narrowed as he realized something was off.

“Where’s your birthmark?”

He swept her hair aside, searching carefully behind her ear and down her neck, but the tiny, crimson mark that had always been there was gone.

It had always been hard to spot–a pinprick of red, tucked away where few would ever see it. He’d never given it much thought, except tonight, when nostalgia made him want to revisit old memories. As he looked, he realized he hadn’t seen it for a long time.

Back when they’d first met, during that snowy mountain trip, he’d only remembered that little red mark behind her ear. It was the one thing about her he’d never forgotten.

Abruptly, Jotham let go of Brianna and switched on the light. She was startled by his sudden intensity.

“I had it removed ages ago. I told you, didn’t I? Did you forget?” she

stammered.

“Why would you do that? It was hidden, no one would see it–but it meant so much to me…” Jotham stared at her, disbelief and urgency in his voice. He’d told her before how much he loved that birthmark, how it was like a

drop of blood from his own heart–priceless.

“I… The spot wasn’t good, supposedly bad luck. The company’s about to go public, and I just wanted some peace of mind.” Brianna hung her head, mumbling an excuse that even she knew sounded ridiculous.

Jotham said nothing, just looked at her as if something inside him had snapped. He lost all interest, grabbed his cigarettes, and said flatly, “I’m going out on the balcony for a smoke. You should get some rest.”

“Jotham…” Brianna tried to stop him, but he didn’t give her the chance.

On the balcony, Jotham shut the door behind him and locked it. He couldn’t hold back anymore, and he dialed Ramona’s number.

At that moment, Ramona had just stepped out of the shower. She wound her long hair up and, barefoot in the kitchen, was slicing fruit for Ethan when she felt a familiar presence behind her–someone’s breath brushed past her ear.

She shivered instinctively, but cool fingertips brushed the spot behind her

ear.

“Ramona, your birthmark… is beautiful.”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
