Empire 171

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

“A birthmark? What birthmark?”

Ramona squirmed as Ethan teased her, her skin tingling from his touch. She tilted her head, finally speaking up. She hadn’t even known there was a birthmark at the nape of her neck.

“A red one,” Ethan murmured, his voice low and intimate, lips brushing just above her skin. “It’s hidden away, but…”

His breath grew heavier, the words trailing off unfinished. For more chapters visit Find✶Novel.net

“But what?”

Though he left his thought hanging, Ramona had already turned to face him.

Ethan suddenly lost his balance, leaning forward. His broad shoulders tensed as he instinctively braced her, pinning Ramona back against the kitchen counter. He moved quickly, slipping his palm behind her head to

cushion her.

His cool breath grazed her cheek; their eyes locked. In the depths of his dark gaze, Ramona saw the same heat she felt–restless yet restrained.

“But…” His voice was a low, seductive rumble. “It’s incredibly alluring. Makes me want to look closer… and not stop.”

The words had barely left his lips before his mouth found hers, warm and

insistent.

Ramona didn’t even have time to catch her breath. A soft, muffled sound escaped her as her head tipped back, surrendering to his sudden

tenderness.

A flush crept across her cheeks, her whole body humming with electricity, nerves alight as her slender fingers curled into his strong, broad back.

Ethan’s kiss was slow but deep, pulling her further in.

Step by step, Ramona retreated until she was trapped between his chest and the counter, breathless and uncomfortable. Ethan shut his eyes, and in one motion, swept her up into his arms. He pulled her close, guiding her legs to wrap around his narrow waist.

She frowned slightly, her body already melting against him. But just as Ethan’s hands slipped beneath her shirt, an abrupt ringtone shattered the

moment.

Her phone was behind her, out of reach with Ethan’s arms holding her fast. He didn’t stop, but the phone kept ringing, one call after another–whoever it was, they weren’t about to give up.

Ramona’s attention wavered. She glanced toward the phone, but Ethan beat her to it, grabbing it first.

A strange number flashed on the screen.

Ramona reached out to hang up, but Ethan, on reflex, tapped “answer” instead. His eyes narrowed, and for once, a flash of irritation crossed his usually composed face.

“Ramona, why did you block my number?”

Suddenly, Jotham’s agitated voice cut through the air between them.

Ramona’s brow knit together. She tried to hang up, but Ethan shifted his hand just out of her reach, denying her the chance.

He stared at her, the heat in his eyes cooling to a chill.

Ramona couldn’t move, pinned as she was. Ethan’s hand braced beside her head, tightening until his knuckles turned white.

Jotham’s voice came again. “Ramona? It’s been so long. I… I really miss

you.”

His tone softened, a suggestive undertone even through the phone.

But to Ramona, the familiar words only made her feel sick.

Ethan watched her, lips barely moving, holding his breath, his chest rising and falling as if he were struggling to contain himself.

She understood what he wanted–he needed to hear her say it to Jotham.

He looked calm on the surface, but the tension in his jaw and the veins standing out on his forehead betrayed him.

“Jotham! Stop calling me. I told you already–we’re done. And…” Ramona forced her voice steady, Ethan’s lingering kiss still warm on her lips, “I’m married now.”

She tried to sound cold and decisive, but as soon as she spoke, Ethan’s hand tightened around her waist, his tongue finding hers again.

She gasped, another involuntary sound slipping out, the intimate noise carrying clearly through the phone.

Jotham was stunned into silence on the other end, and then more suggestive noises filtered through the line.

He snapped, “Ramona? What are you talking about? You’re my wife! Who could you possibly be married to?”

His angry voice spilled from the phone, but all he got in reply were deeper breaths and tangled sighs.

Ramona could hardly focus on what Jotham was saying. Ethan’s kisses were overwhelming, consuming her every thought. Suddenly, she felt his body react against her…

“Ramona, what are you doing? Are you really going this far just to spite me?” Jotham’s voice dropped, trying to rein in his temper. He wasn’t ready to give up. After all, the more upset she was, the more she must

care.

“She’s not trying to spite you,” Ethan finally said, voice rough with desire. “She’s just busy making love with her husband. Call her again, and I’ll make sure you regret it.”

With that, Ethan hung up and tossed the phone aside.

Ramona was breathless and flushed, slumped against his chest.

Ethan tightened his hold for a moment, but then abruptly stilled, pulling back just before crossing the line.

She clung to his neck, refusing to let go. “Are you mad?”

“Yeah. I’m jealous.”

Ramona hadn’t expected him to admit it so plainly.

Ethan gathered her down from the counter, his hand tracing gently along her cheek. His touch was soft, but his eyes were still cold, a storm barely

concealed.

“Ethan, I’m not the kind of person who looks back. The day I learned the truth, I knew I’d never let him back into my heart. I’ve already blocked him. If you’re still worried…”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
