The Paper Wife's Empire · NovelDrama.Org

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

“What’s going on?” Ramona immediately replied.

She knew the people she’d brought onto the team could all handle pressure; they wouldn’t complain unless something serious had happened.

As soon as Ramona appeared in the group chat, replies came flooding in. Turned out, Jotham had taken Brianna to a client meeting today. When they got back, the client abruptly asked about the termination process. Now, the company chat was in complete chaos.

Brianna, in a foul mood, started taking it out on Ramona’s team.

And this wasn’t even the first time. Brianna had only been here two days, yet it felt like she’d made it her personal mission to target them-transferring all their projects elsewhere and slashing their bonuses under every possible pretext.

A flash of coldness crossed Ramona’s eyes. After a long pause, she finally typed out a line:

“Don’t worry. Take some time off and leave the company mess to me. I’ll

handle it.”

With Ramona’s reply, everyone felt a renewed sense of confidence.

Ramona was both a mentor and a friend to them. From day one, she’d been their strongest support.

Everyone believed that as long as Ramona was around, the team wouldn’t fall apart.

Closing the chat window, Ramona considered for a moment before dialing one of her people.

“Get me some photos of Brianna these days-her cozying up to Jotham

and hanging around the Holt family. Send them straight to Jotham’s mother.”

Ramona knew Winnie all too well. Winnie despised Brianna for trying to seduce Jotham, and now that Brianna had moved into the Holt family’s house like she owned the place, Winnie would go ballistic if she found

out.

Ramona had planned to let Jotham sweat for a bit, but she hadn’t expected Brianna to start bullying her people so soon.

Well, so be it.

Letting Winnie deal with Brianna would kill three birds with one stone: Brianna would be too busy to stir up trouble for Ramona’s team, Winnie would get her revenge, and Jotham would find himself caught in the crossfire.

Setting down her phone, Ramona barely had a moment to breathe before her assistant rushed in.

“Ms. Jarrett, um…”

Ramona’s gaze chilled when she noticed the assistant’s empty hands. “Where’s what I asked for?”

“They said, since you don’t have full company access yet, there’s… nothing they can give you at the moment.”

The assistant hung her head, clearly having been given the runaround.

Ramona had been back at Covington Group for several days now, but the shareholders were avoiding her, and she was kept completely out of the loop regarding company affairs.

She knew exactly what was happening-Melinda was orchestrating everything behind the scenes, trying to sideline her completely.

If things kept going this way, Ramona’s footing at Covington Group would only become more precarious. Read complete version only at

Thape th

Knock, knock-

Just then, someone tapped at the office door,

Ramona answered, and Holden stepped inside.

He carried a slim stack of documents. With a single look, he dismissed the assistant. He set the papers down on the wide, polished black desk.

Ramona glanced at them-it was one of Covington Group’s failed projects. The project had already lost millions, with its funding completely dried up.

“What’s this supposed to mean?” Ramona looked up, meeting Holden’s gaze, the trace of a cool smile on his lips.

“I’ve heard my dear sister is quite the star at handling tough projects,” Holden said, settling leisurely into a hand-stitched Italian leather chair. His suit was impeccably tailored, radiating quiet luxury under the sunlight.

“Covington Group’s team is hardly lacking in talent, Mr. Covington. And besides, I’m part of management, not the project division.”

She could tell Holden was purposely making things difficult, but she remained calm and composed, betraying nothing.

“Of course. We have plenty of talented people at Covington Group,” Holden conceded, fingers interlaced as he nodded with another faint smile. “I know you’re eager to take charge here, but unless you earn the support of the board and senior management, handing over full control would put both Mom and me in a very awkward position.”

“I suppose whether or not I get that support really depends on you and Melinda, doesn’t it?” Ramona’s tone was light, but the sarcasm was unmistakable.

Their eyes met across the desk. Both were smiling, yet the tension in the room was so thick it was almost tangible.

“We’re family, Ramona. No need to treat me like the enemy. I just think, if you can turn around a project that’s on the brink of collapse, then you’ll have every right to take the reins.”

He paused, then added, “But you’ll have to do it on your own-no company resources, no access to any of your personal assets. You’ll have to prove yourself, fair and square, and earn everyone’s trust.”

Holden’s tone was unhurried, as if the stakes were trivial. He had no interest in a war of words; his goal was simply to make Ramona back down.

He was ruthless, too. He’d picked the most hopeless project in Covington Group. The subsidiary’s funding had been cut off for half a year, three different teams had already tried and failed, and even Holden’s own people had thrown in the towel.

But when Ramona flipped to the list of potential partners and saw Shelton Group on the page, she almost laughed.

Holden’s little challenge was nearly impossible, even with substantial funding.

But as luck would have it, this was the very project she’d previously handled, a deal with Shelton Group. The same project that Brianna had just bungled.

Mr. Shelton would only work with her; Brianna and Jotham had already made three unsuccessful pitches, which meant this was now Ramona’s way in.

When it came to projects like this, no one in the country could match her. This was her specialty. In fact, this project was practically hers already.

If she managed to snatch this deal away from Holt Group, she’d not only pull Covington Group out of disaster, but also leave Jotham and Brianna utterly humiliated.

Ramona looked up at Holden, a faint, knowing smile on her lips.

“If you think I’m up for the challenge, Mr. Covington, I’m happy to take it on. But let’s be clear from the start: I’ll be running this my way.”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
