This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

Holden wasn’t wrong about one thing.

The Covington Group had always been ruthless when it came to controlling talent. Even Holden had started at the bottom, clawing his way up by repeatedly steering the company past milestones before finally earning his current position.

If Ramona wanted to gain control of the Covington Group and silence every doubter, she’d have to do a lot more than just win over Holden and Melinda. Read complete version only at find~novel~net

“Fine,” Holden replied casually.

“But how can I be sure that landing this project on my own will actually get me management authority?”

Holden’s lips curled in a mocking smile. He thought Ramona was hopelessly naïve.

He was already prepared. With a quick tap on his phone, he sent a contract straight to Ramona’s laptop.

“This is a wager agreement. Sign it, and it’s binding. If you succeed, you’ll have the same management rights as I do. Of course, there are still some powers that Mom keeps separate. I don’t have control over those.”

Holden hadn’t even finished speaking when his phone chimed-a notification that Ramona had signed immediately.

Watching the striking profile of the woman beside him, a glint of

amusement flickered in Holden’s eyes. He raised his watch, almost as an afterthought.

“Almost forgot-you have one week. Time’s up, and the deal’s off. Good luck.”

Evening, the Holt estate.

Winnie was playing cards in the lounge with several of her friends when a servant suddenly brought in a package.

“Madam, there’s a file for you. It’s addressed to your

name.”

“Who sent it?” Winnie didn’t bother to glance up from her hand, her voice frosty.

She hadn’t been in a good mood lately.

Griffin had forbidden her from helping Eulalia recover after the baby, all because of Ramona. Her daughter kept calling every other day to

complain-arguing with Flynn again, not quite at the brink of divorce, but never really at peace, either.

“No idea, ma’am. It was delivered anonymously, and it’s sealed,” the servant replied.

Winnie’s hand was going badly, and she was already annoyed. She waved her hand dismissively. “Open it for me. Let’s see what it is.”

The servant did as told. Inside was a stack of photographs, which she handed directly to Winnie.

The faces in the photos were all too familiar.

“Oh my, isn’t that Jotham? And who’s the woman with him? Not Ramona, that’s for sure. She’s a stranger!”

“Don’t tell me Jotham’s finally decided to have an affair?”

The moment the words left the woman’s mouth, the rest of the card group

crowded around for a better look.

“Don’t be ridiculous! Jotham’s always kept himself above reproach!”

Winnie’s hand trembled; her cards slipped from her grasp and scattered across the table. Fury flashing in her eyes, she lunged for the photos.

But the moment she got a good look, all the color drained from her face.

The woman in the photos was none other than Brianna-the one who had vanished five years ago.

Brianna had first appeared at the Holt estate at twenty-two, fresh out of a prestigious university. Jotham had hired her as his private tutor. Everyone in the Holt family had thought highly of Brianna at first, but just a few months later, Alaric discovered that she and Jotham had an

inappropriate relationship.

No one knew exactly when they’d met. The tutoring job was just a cover; the two had been secretly meeting right under everyone’s noses.

Alaric had flown into a rage, nearly running Brianna out of Havencrest City.

Everyone had assumed it ended there, but when Jotham went off to university, Brianna started teaching at the same school, and the two rekindled their romance in secret.

The Holts had tried everything: talking sense into Jotham, threatening Brianna, alternating between kindness and pressure to force them apart.

Then Jotham met Ramona. Ramona’s background wasn’t impressive, but after Jotham’s scandal with Brianna, the family had no choice but to look the other way.

Still, Alaric had never been at ease. On his deathbed, he even left a will instructing his wife, Liliane, to safeguard the family assets, just in case Jotham and Brianna ever found their way back to each other.

It took Winnie a long moment to recover. She sifted through every photograph, scrutinizing each one.

They weren’t taken somewhere else-these were all in Jotham’s house. Brianna wasn’t just back; she was living there.

That night, as Brianna stepped inside Jotham’s front door, she immediately noticed a pair of women’s heels by the entryway.

They weren’t Ramona’s style, that much was clear.

Her nerves tensed. She was just about to turn and leave when a cold, biting female voice stopped her in her tracks.

“My, my, Brianna. Long time no see. When did you move in? Why didn’t you think to let me know?”

A chill ran down Brianna’s spine, freezing her to the spot. Her lips trembled, and it was a long moment before she dared look up.

Winnie stood there, wrapped in a shawl. Her gaze was icy and venomous, locking onto Brianna’s face.

Brianna instinctively sucked in a breath, sweat breaking out across her skin. Swallowing hard, she finally managed, “Winnie, please don’t misunderstand. I have a reason for staying with Jotham-”

“Brianna, some things never change with you, do they?” Winnie cut her off, strolling forward at a measured pace. “Still just as shameless as

ever.”

“Winnie-”

Brianna’s face darkened, but before she could get another word out, a sharp slap cracked through the air.

Pain seared across her cheek. Brianna gasped, clutching her face in

disbelief as she stared at Winnie.

The commotion drew the attention of the household staff, but with Winnie standing there, no one dared intervene.

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
