Empire 96
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Florence hurried to explain to Ethan, “I invited Ramona over for dinner tonight. When she heard something happened to you, she was really worried. Honestly, Ethan, you can’t just leave her in the dark every time you get busy. You two are engaged, and Ramona is your fiancée. Don’t make her worry like that, alright?”
Though she felt for her grandson, Florence couldn’t help but chide Ethan, thinking about how Ramona must feel.
“What are you doing–cough-”
Ethan had been annoyed by Florence’s fussing, but hearing that Ramona was worried about him, and seeing her watching the screen with tears shining in her eyes, his irritation evaporated. A hundred thoughts flashed across his mind, and he felt suddenly defenseless.
He dropped his gaze, unable to finish his sentence, a flush creeping up his cheeks.
If there was one thing Ethan dreaded, it was being fussed over.
As a child, he’d felt that being cared for was a sign of weakness, so no matter how sick or wronged he felt, he’d never let anyone see.
As an adult, with the weight of the family on his shoulders, he’d taught himself never to show any vulnerability.
But Ramona’s concern was so open, so direct. It pulled him back to those lonely childhood days, making him feel as exposed as an open wound. It wouldn’t hurt so much if no one noticed; it was only when someone saw that the pain became sharp.
Ramona peered at the screen, concern etched on her brow. “Mr. Jordon, are you running a fever? Your face is all red…”
“…I’m fine. It’s just a bit of a cold,” Ethan replied quickly, doing his best to sound normal, though he avoided meeting Ramona’s eyes.
“Did you see a doctor?” she pressed.
Florence was worried too, but she didn’t want to intrude. She quietly handed the phone to Ramona and slipped out of the room, taking the housekeeper with her.
The living room fell silent. Ramona’s gentle questions, one after another, made it harder and harder for Ethan to put up a front.
“Ramona.” His voice dropped, a hard edge to it. “Really, I’m fine.”
Only when he said her name did Ramona seem to snap out of it, her heart suddenly fluttering.
What was she doing? She was getting a little too involved.
“I’m sorry, I know I’m probably bothering you. But whether you like it or not, Mr. Jordon, I have to say this: your health comes first. If anyone should take care of you, it ought to be you. I don’t want to see you getting hurt over anything, because…”
She trailed off mid–sentence.

“Because what?” Ethan’s voice softened, his deep eyes fixed on the crease between her brows.
“Because,” she bit her lip, her voice barely above a whisper, “it breaks my heart.”
The last words were almost inaudible, but Ethan heard them clearly.
“Ramona…” His voice, husky and gentle, brushed against her heart like rain on strings. “Do you know what it means, saying things like that to a man who’s sick?”
Ramona froze, unable to speak, before she heard Ethan’s low voice again.
“Ramona, I want to see you.” Newest update provided by FindN0vel.net
His breath came slow and heavy, as if the warmth of it could cross the screen and settle against her
skin.
Even if just for a moment, Ethan found himself longing for Ramona’s company, longing for her to simply be there beside him. He’d never felt such a fierce longing for anyone in his life. It left him feeling unmoored, uncertain.
“Mr. Jordon, where are you right now?” Ramona blurted, surprising herself.
“I’m in Kingston–cough-” Ethan replied, but his throat caught and he paused, wincing.
He steadied himself, managing a faint smile. “I really appreciate how much you care. Don’t worry about me. I just have a cold, and I’ve already taken some medicine. It’s late, you should get some rest… wait for me to come home.”
It was rare for Ethan to say so much at once; it was clear he was trying hard to put her mind at ease.
The last words left Ramona’s heart aching with tenderness. She nodded, not wanting to keep him up any longer. After a brief goodbye, she hung up.
It was late, but she couldn’t sleep at all.
Ethan set down his phone, barely able to stifle another violent cough.
Ash appeared with a glass of medicine. “Sir, maybe you should really see a doctor… It won’t put us that far behind schedule.”
He looked genuinely worried. Sure, the project involved hundreds of millions and even a day’s delay meant enormous losses, but Ethan had already pulled three all–nighters and still had a low–grade fever. If something happened to him, the consequences would be far worse.
“Just go, Ash. I want to finish this as soon as possible.”
Ethan seemed to be in unusually good spirits. He downed the medicine in one go and, for once, didn’t snap at Ash for fussing.
…
The next morning, when Ethan opened his eyes, he realized he was lying in bed. He frowned, feeling the cooling strip pressed to his forehead and slowly sat up.
Someone had changed his clothes, tucked the blankets snugly around him, and though he’d sweat a lot, his body felt much lighter.
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
