Empire 97
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Chapter 97
Ethan’s voice was hoarse as he called out, his throat still dry and painfully sore.
He remembered working late in his study last night, but couldn’t recall when or how he’d made it back
to bed.
“Mr. Jordon!”
Just as Ethan threw off the covers and started to get up, a familiar figure appeared at the edge of his vision. He squinted, half–convinced he was imagining things.
“Ramona?”
“It’s me. Your fever’s only just broken, so don’t move. Lie back and rest.”
Ramona set a bowl of mild, nourishing soup on the bedside table. As soon as her hands were free, she reached out to steady Ethan’s arm, gently but firmly pushing him back onto the bed.
Ethan was tall and broad–shouldered; even weakened, Ramona didn’t stand a chance against his strength. With little effort, he pulled her into his arms.
She landed against his chest, soft as a kitten curling up for warmth. Their eyes met, hers bright as stars scattered across a midnight sky, a touch of red on her cheeks; his gaze clouded by fatigue and
threaded with red.
Worried she might have hurt him, Ramona murmured an apology and tried to get up, but Ethan’s hand remained firm around her waist, refusing to let her go.
“What are you doing here?”
His breath, still fever–warm, brushed against Ramona’s ear and neck, making her shiver.
“I was worried about you, so I came by to check in. Your project data is my specialty, so I went ahead and finished some of your work. That way, you can get more rest and won’t fall behind.”
Ramona’s lashes fluttered as she spoke, voice soft and earnest. Her eyes lingered on Ethan’s pale face, his brow still faintly furrowed.
After hanging up with Ethan last night, she’d called Ash. That’s when she learned Ethan’s “little cold” was really several days of fever, and he’d been working through it.
She made up her mind on the spot–she’d help him in Kingston.
Ramona had arrived in the dead of night to find Ethan passed out at his desk, utterly spent. She’d asked Ash to help get him to bed and stayed with him until his fever finally broke. Only then did she finish the tasks Ethan hadn’t been able to complete.
As she explained, a flicker of surprise passed through Ethan’s eyes. But it vanished quickly, replaced by something unreadable. His grip tightened, almost unconsciously.
“Who told you to do all that? Did you even sleep last night?”
“If you would follow doctor’s orders, I wouldn’t have to meddle… Anyway, one sleepless night for me is

nothing compared to you pulling all–nighters for days.”
Ramona knew Ethan far better now. She recognized that his gruffness was just armor for a soft Original content can be found at ⓝovelFind.net
heart.
Sure enough, her words brought a fleeting hint of guilt to Ethan’s face. “I…”
“Alright, I’ve got a meeting with Covington Group this afternoon, and I have to catch a flight soon. But before I go, I need to see you actually rest. Promise me you won’t push yourself, okay?”
Ethan stilled, caught off guard by her gentle scolding. No one had spoken to him like this in years.
He was Ethan Jordon, the sole heir to the Jordon family, wielding enough power to shake global markets. At eighteen, he’d taken the helm of the family business; by twenty–two, he’d ended the infighting and claimed total control; at twenty–six, he’d taken Jordon Group international.
People didn’t tell him to stop pushing himself. And no one had ever tried to coax him into resting like a stubborn child.
Ramona smiled at him. Before Ethan could gather a reply, she reached up and peeled the cooling gel strip from his forehead, checking his temperature with her hand.
“Finally, no more fever…”
She gently moved his arm aside and straightened up, stirring the soup at his bedside.
“Ash mentioned you haven’t been eating properly these past few days. If your throat hurts, eat something mild first and you’ll feel better.”
“…Thank you.”
Ethan looked at the spoonful of soup she held to his lips, suddenly self–conscious. His Adam’s apple bobbed, but at last, he leaned forward and took the bite.
Warm broth eased down his throat, and Ramona’s tenderness filled his view, threatening to melt his resolve entirely.
After he finished the whole bowl, Ramona finally looked relieved. She got up to let him rest a bit more.
But before she could leave, Ethan caught her hand. “These past few days… did you miss me?”
His voice was rough, nearly lost to the soreness, but it still made her heart skip.
“Mr. Jordon…”
Ramona’s cheeks flushed, and she hesitated–but before she could answer, Ethan spoke again: “Being able to see the person you miss, right when you want to… It’s a wonderful feeling.”
His gaze grew more intense, and Ramona’s heart hammered in her chest. Her skin flushed, a wave of heat washing over her.
“Ms. Jarrett, your car is waiting for the airport…”
Just then, Ash pushed open the door. He’d come to remind Ramona about her flight, only to find the two of them holding hands, lost in their own world. Embarrassed, he all but shrank into himself.
“Ah, right, my flight. Mr. Jordon, take care of yourself, alright?”

Ramona tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and stood to leave. At the door, she paused and turned back, her voice barely above a whisper: “I came in a hurry this time… but I missed you, too.”
Before Ethan could say a word, she turned and hurried out, not daring to look back.
Ethan glanced at Ash, who lingered awkwardly by the door. “Well? Go see Ms. Jarrett out.”
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
