Daniel tosses me a t–shirt as I take off to find Gabriel and Jack. I’d smelled their scents close to Kaelin’s, but they could easily explain that with excuses. What will be more difficult will be explaining that they told the patrols that there was no danger, when clearly there was.

I jog up the steps to the Beta floor, the floor that will be mine and Daniel’s soon. I have no doubt I can defeat Gabriel in a battle for the Beta position. The man is ridiculously lazy and barely worth the title of warrior, much less Beta, even with the training that Sloane and I have implemented recently.

When I get to his floor, I burst into his bedroom without knocking.

“What the fuck?” he yells. His hair is wet and he’s wearing boxer shorts.

“My question exactly Gabriel. What the fuck are you doing in your bedroom when we had an intruder alert?” I growl.

“I was in the shower. I didn’t hear anything,” he says.

“Really?” I growl, walking closer to him. I was sound asleep and I heard Aisling.

“Yeah, really. Now get the fuck out of my bedroom, warrior,” he says, stressing the title he thinks I have.

“Get your ass downstairs. You have some explaining to do,” I snarl stepping farther into the bedroom.

“I don’t answer to you, or that Alpha bitch,” he says, stepping into my space.

“Aww, but you DO answer to your Alpha. So get your fucking ass downstairs and explain why you and your little conniving friend told the patrols it didn’t matter that we had an intruder so close to our borders and why you didn’t answer the call of an intruder.”

“I just said, I don’t answer to you,” he snarls, reaching up like he’s going to grab me around the throat.

I grab his wrist, swing my body around so I’m facing away from him, then throw him over my shoulder onto the floor.

He snarls, leaping up quickly, but I’m ready for him. He has very few moves and he leads before he attacks, so I always know which move he’s going to make. The moment his fist swings up to punch me in the face, I spin around, swiping his feet out from underneath him. When he hits the ground, I slam my elbow into his solar plexus, forcing the air out of his lungs.

I get up and wait until he’s able to suck in air.

“Are you done yet?” I ask as he gets to his feet.

He lunges at me, wrapping his arms around my waist and slamming me against his dresser. I lift my arms over my head then slam my elbows onto his back before landing a punch to his kidneys.

This time, when he releases me, I don’t stop. I spin around, ignoring the pain in my back where I hit the dresser, and swing my leg at his head. My foot connects with his face and his body spins to the ground.

“BITCH!” he snarls, wiping the blood from his mouth.

When he lunges at me again, I side–step him, punching my fist into his kidney. He spins around, obviously in pain, but I don’t give him time to recover. I’ve had enough of this asshole. I’m pissed that he got past me and because of that Kaelin almost got to Sloane.

Davina pushes forward as I make a list and punch him right in his face. Ifis nose explodes into a bloody mess, and I hear the satisfying crunch as his nose breaks. Then his eyes roll back into his head, and he drops to the floor.

“Asshole.” I grumble as I drag him out of his room and to the stairs, I shove him down the stairs, not caring that his head keeps bouncing against the tiled steps as he tumbles down.

“What the fuck?” Jack growls as I get to the Gamma floor.

“Oh good. There you are. Were you also ‘showering‘ and missed he call of an intruder?” I growl.

“What the fuck did you do to Gabriel?”

“The same thing I’m about to do to you,” I say, before slamming my fist into his face and knocking him unconscious.

Then I drag his weak ass to the stairs and start kicking both men bodies down the stairwell. The warriors in the packhouse stop and look at me just as Sloane and Alpha Waylon walk in.

“Are you okay?” Sloane asks me.

“Peachy keen, jellybean. They put up a fight,” I say, shrugging.

“Take them to the cells,” Sloane says to the warriors standing around.

They look from her to Alpha Waylon. He nods and they drag the two of them off.

Daniel comes jogging up. “You’re hurt.”

“Not badly. Davina is already healing me,” I tell him.

“Would the two of you join us in my office?” Alpha Waylon asks me and Daniel. Luna Judith comes out of the kitchen and opens the safe room door where the omegas had gone at the alert of an intruder.

“Judith, love, can you get us some coffee?” he asks. I know it’s the middle of the night, but he sounds exhausted.

“You know it’s not your fault, Scar,” Daniel says as we follow Alpha Waylon to his office.

“Of course it’s not,” Sloane says, frowning at me.

“No, if it’s anyone’s fault, it’s mine. I’m the Alpha, after all,” Alpha Waylon says as we walk into his office.

He sighs as he closes the door behind us looking more defeated than I’ve ever seen an Alpha look.

Waylon POV

I had hoped that Kaelin wouldn’t get wind of Sloane’s time here in the pack, but that was just an old man’s wishful thinking.

Now, not only does he know about Sloane, he knows that she’s related to him and therefore, a true heir to the pack.

“He came for a reason, Grandpa. He didn’t come to kill you, although that thought scares me because he could have. He came here for me. There’s no way he could have known that I was his niece until he entered my bedroom. If that’s the case, and we’re right that Gabriel and Jack were helping him, then he knows that I’m underage. He either planned to kill me, which I doubt because he was gone before Aisling woke me up, or he planned to take me with him. If that’s the case, I’m no sure why he didn’t,” Sloane says.

I wish I could say that Kaelin wouldn’t do that, but I just don’t know anymore.

“He was probably planning to mark you,” Scarlet says.

“Why do you say that?” Sloane asks, her lips curling in revulsion

“Like you said, he didn’t know you were related. If Gabriel and lack told him that Alpha Waylon was preparing to hand the pack over to you, he probably thought that marking you would make it impossible for your grandfather not to give the pack

to him.”

“Ew! He’s literally my father’s age,” she says.

Judith comes in with coffee. She hands out cups of coffee then comes to sit in my lap. I’m so tired. I’m so ready to retire and be done with my job as an Alpha, but I have to wait until Sloane is ready.

“Sloane, what do you want to do?” I ask.

“I don’t think we have a choice now, Grandpa. Kaelin is going to do one of two things. He’s going to come challenge you for the pack or he’s going to wage war. Kaelin doesn’t strike me as the kind of man who is willing to work for what he wants. You are an easy target, Grandpa. I don’t mean that in a bad way…” she begins.

“I understand what you mean, Sloane. I’m too old to still be an acting Alpha. My time for retirement is well past.”

She nods, watching me. “I think we need to have my Alpha ceremony today, before my birthday.”

I feel a wave of relief wash over me.

“Are you sure?” I ask her.

“I have a better chance of defeating Kaelin than you do. And like Scarlet suggested, I’m going to call my uncle and Benedict and let them know what’s going on. It’s too late to move my birthday party here, so I’ll still go celebrate at Uncle Roman and Aunt Samara’s pack, but I’ll ask them to send warriors to help guard the pack while I’m gone.”

She turns to Daniel. “Did you have any concerns about the patrols, or did you feel confident that they were following Gabriel’s orders?”

“There is one that I’m not sure about, but most of them were appalled when you howled that we had an intruder.”

“There will be other Kaelin sympathizers in your pack, Grandpa. I need to know who they are. My first act as Alpha will be to demote Gabriel and Jack and promote Scarlet and Daniel. I don’t know who I’ll get to act as my Gamma, but right now, having the two traitors removed from their positions is most important.”

I watch as my granddaughter begins to take on her role as Alpha right in front of my eyes.

‘She reminds me so much of Derrick,‘ Judith says in the mind link.

‘I wish I’d had more time with him. I wish I’d been a better father to him and mate to you.‘

‘You can’t live in the past, Waylon. All you can do is live for today Be a better man now. Help your granddaughter be successful. Let her take her place as your rightful heir and Alpha of this pack.

“Okay, we need to make some phone calls. Grandpa, what time do you want to have the ceremony?” Sloane asks me.

“Alpha Roman and Luna Samara will need a few hours to get here, so let’s say mid–afternoon. If you’re right about Kaelin coming to challenge me today, I don’t want to wait too long. My son is a fool. He won’t believe that you could ever defeat him because you’re a woman. He is sorely mistaken,” I say.

“You know I may have to kill him, right?” she says gently, reaching out to lay a hand on my arm.

“I do. I also know if there is any way to defeat him without killing him, you’ll find it.”

“And if he wages war …” she growls.

“Then he and whoever he brought with him, will die.”

I watch the three of them leave as I let my mate hold mic.

It’s very likely I will lose my last remaining son today. But if it means that my granddaughter will survive to take on her father’s legacy, then so be it.
