Chapter 10:

He stared up at her with slightly narrowed eyes, silently warning her not to do anything reckless.

But Janice just shot him a mischievous smile. “Delilah, are you that fond of Aiden? I’m willing to cancel this engagement and step back. You two can get back together.”

Delilah’s expression changed when she heard that. “Stop spouting nonsense! Your engagement was arranged by his grandfather and ours. It would break their hearts if they found out you plan to end this union.”

“Enough with that attitude, Janice! Take a look at your sister. See how obedient and sensible she is,” Laurie scolded Janice and continued to stroke Delilah’s back. “If you still want to be part of the Edwards family, you’d better apologize and admit your mistake. Otherwise, I shall disown you here and now.”

Janice straightened and clapped her hands, her smile never leaving her face. “In that case, I must congratulate myself for escaping a lifetime of misery.”

“What did you say? Are you seriously going to sever your relationship with the Edwards family?” Laurie glared at Janice with a long face.

Janice scoffed. “I’ve completely lost hope in you. From now on, I will live only for myself. Your affairs have nothing to do with me.”

Needless to say, Laurie was livid. But she knew she couldn’t afford to lose her temper. Not in the presence of so many influential figures, anyway.

Janice continued, “Please take good care of your precious adopted daughter. I would bet good money that she feels very wronged right now, and no doubt needs some extra love and a lot of attention.”

Delilah gritted her teeth and cursed Janice inwardly. She swore to herself that she wasn’t going to let the latter off easily.

Despite her inner thoughts, Delilah maintained a fragile, innocent facade. “Let’s just go, Mom. Janice has gone mad. She doesn’t want us anywhere near her. Dad will be furious if he hears of this.”

“Never mind her, Delilah. Your father will deal with her later.” Laurie didn’t believe for a second that Janice would actually cut ties with them.

Janice was an orphan, after all, with no family background to speak of until she was brought back to the Edwards family.

Laurie was convinced that Janice was acting out in order to get their attention. Once Janice realized that her actions only angered her family, she would apologize and beg them to take her in again.

Once Laurie and Delilah were gone, Aiden leaned back in his wheelchair and raised an eyebrow at Janice. “Do you realize how dangerous your behavior was just now?”

Janice wasn’t the least bit perturbed. She flashed him a grin and asked, “What’s wrong? Are you mad at me now?”

Aiden’s gaze turned sharp. “We have a business transaction, nothing more. If you do something like that again, I won’t hesitate to call things off altogether.”

“Would you look at that? The esteemed heir of the Green family gets riled up so easily—can’t even handle a little teasing,” Janice remarked, her voice tinged with amusement as she effortlessly brushed off Aiden’s ominous warning. “You’re not going to back out of this deal, though. You’ll soon realize my worth extends far beyond what you see now.”

“Oh, really?” Aiden’s eyebrow arched, a flicker of intrigue lighting up his eyes as he regarded Janice.

Yet, she offered no further explanation, only shooting him a mysterious glance that suggested he’d understand in time. With an air of poised assurance, she turned and walked away.
