Chapter 743
The sound of children's happy laughter drifted up from downstairs.
It was Saturday, so the two kinds didn't have to go to preschool.
Briony lay on her back, staring at the ceiling for a few moments. Five minutes later, she sat up, threw back the covers, and headed into the bathroom to get ready for
the day.
Downstairs, the children's cheerful voices chirped like little birds, almost without pause.
At seven that morning, after brushing their teeth and getting dressed, Mario and Little Nina had come downstairs hand in hand. The moment they saw Stewart sitting on the sofa reading the newspaper, they were overjoyed.
But their excitement quickly turned to concern when they noticed the thick bandages wrapped around both of his hands.
Though young, the children knew to feel sorry for their father. Each took one of his hands and, with pouted lips, blew on them gently. The sight made both Marlene and Carol, who were passing by, smile warmly.
The kids asked Stewart how he had hurt his hands.
"I was just careless," he said simply. "It'll be better in a few days."
Crystal, who had witnessed the whole thing, couldn't hold back. She told the two little ones that their father had been injured protecting their mother, a classic case of a hero saving the beauty!
Little Nina's eyes sparkled. She covered her mouth and let out a soft gasp of awe. "Wow! So Daddy is Mommy's hero!"
Hearing his daughter's words, Stewart couldn't help but smile.
"Daddy is so amazing!" Mario looked at his father with pure admiration. "I want to grow up fast and be big and tall like Daddy. Then I can be a hero for Mommy and Little Nina with Daddy!"
"Yes, yes!" Little Nina clapped her hands. "Then our family will have two big heroes to protect me and Mommy!"
Stewart's lips curved into a smile. Looking at his two adorable children, his heart swelled with warmth.
Since Stewart was the patient, the two children took it upon themselves to care for him.
At the breakfast table, Little Nina held a spoon, blew on it, and then brought it to Stewart's lips. "Daddy, your hands hurt. I'll feed you. Here you go open wide
Stewart was at a loss for words.
Mario held out a peeled boiled egg. "Daddy, eggs are good for you." Stewart was again speechless.
Marlene emerged from the kitchen with freshly baked rolls, and seeing the scene, she couldn't stop grinning. "Mr. Wentworth, you're so lucky To have such filial children at your age.
Stewart could be shameless in front of Briony, but only in front of Briony. Now, with his children and Marlene watching, he was too embarrassed to let them feed him.
He cleared his throat, his voice low and gentle. "Thank you, but while Daddy's
hands are bandaged, I can still hold a spoon. I can do it myself."
To prove his point, he took the spoon from his daughter and took a mouthful of porridge. He could, in fact, eat by himself.
Next, he speared the boiled egg with a fork and, under Mario's watchful eye, took a bite. Only then did Mario relax and focus on his own breakfast.
Little Nina watched her father, her sweet voice chirping, "Daddy, you have to eat a lot so your boo-boos get better faster-"
Stewart was touched by his daughter's sweetness. He smiled. "Okay, Daddy will eat a lot. You eat up too, Little Nina."
"Mhm!" Little Nina nodded and picked up her own cartoon spoon, eating obediently.
Briony stood nearby, silently observing the interaction between Stewart and their children.
Though his bandaged fingers were clumsy, he had no problem holding a spoon or fork. It was clear the man had some pride to maintain in front of his kids.
Briony thought back to last night, when he had played the victim to get her to feed him without a shred of the dignity he was displaying now.
A sly smile touched her lips, and a mischievous glint appeared in her eyes.
She walked over and stood behind him. Her gaze fell on the hand
holding the spoon, and her wo
tang out slowly and clearly, "Well it looks like you can hold a spoon and fork just fine, doesn't it?"
Stewart froze.
