Chapter 744
Briony sat down across from Stewart.
Marlene placed a bowl of porridge in front of her and, glancing at Stewart, tried to smooth things over for him.
"Mr. Wentworth is just putting on a brave face. He doesn't want to appear weak in front of the children!"
Stewart cleared his throat, doing his best to salvage the situation.
"The wound feels much better today, and the bandages have loosened a bit, so I have some movement in my fingers."
Briony had seen right through his little act, but considering the sacrifice he'd made, she didn't have the heart to disappoint him further. She'd play along for a few days, like humoring a child.
"As long as it's improving," Briony said. "After breakfast, I'll take you to the hospital to get the dressing changed and for your IV."
Stewart looked at her.
Briony kept her head down, sipping her porridge. Seeing that her expression was normal and she wasn't angry, Stewart quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
After breakfast, Briony prepared to take Stewart to the hospital. She also planned to visit Stella while they were there.
Little Nina and Mario clamored to go with them. But hospitals were full of germs, and Briony didn't want to take them. When they heard they couldn't come, both children pouted, their faces mirroring each other in disappointment.
Briony was at a loss.
"Mommy and Daddy are going for a check-up. You two be good and stay home with your baby sister. Daddy will be staying here for a few days, so we'll have plenty of time together."
That seemed to satisfy them. They obediently waved goodbye to their parents.
Briony drove, with Stewart in the passenger seat. The ride was silent.
When they arrived at the hospital, Briony drove into the underground garage. After parking the car, she turned off the engine and unbuckled her seatbelt—
"Bryn."
Briony paused, turning to look at the man beside her. "Yes?"
Stewart looked at her, his expression serious. "I'll find a time to have someone issue
a press release to clarify things between me and Xenia Cooper."
Briony released her seatbelt buckle
and thought for a moment. "You know, Xenia hasn't had it easy either. Even though she's saying the partnership is over we both know that if she hadn't willingly chosen to end it, we would have been bound by that ten-year agreement. At least, you certainly would have honored it."
Stewart didn't deny it. "If she hadn't agreed, I would have had to see the ten-year agreement through to the end."
Briony raised an eyebrow. "That's right. After all, our dear Attorney Wentworth is a man of his word."
Stewart froze, then rushed to explain. “Bryn, don't misunderstand. I would have honored it because I..."
“Because you couldn't bear to gamble with my life."
Stewart stared at her, stunned.
Briony met his gaze, her beautiful eyes curving into a gentle smile. Her voice was soft. "Stewart, you don't have to be so tense. After everything we've been through, there are some things understand now even if you; don't say them."
He just looked at her, speechless.
Briony continued, "Xenia Cooper donated her bone marrow for me. I know you helped her solve a lot of problems and secured significant benefits for her in return, but af the end of the day, she helped us So, if you're going to make a clarification, I think you should discuss it with her first."
"I know." Stewart's heart fluttered. He was touched and thrilled. "Bryn, thank you. Thank you for understanding me, and thank you for being willing to trust me again.”
"It was all just a misunderstanding." As she said this, Briony herself felt a little embarrassed. “I used to think you and Xenia had really gotten married, and I treated you horribly. Looking back, it wasn't fair to you."
