Chapter 761
The female caregiver was helping Xenia sip some warm water. When she saw Briony and Stewart, she greeted them, “Ms. Kensington, Mr. Wentworth."
Briony gave a slight nod and walked over to the bed, looking at Xenia. "How are you feeling now?"
Xenia had been unconscious for over two weeks and had lost a lot of weight. Though she had just woken up and hadn't regained her strength, her mind was clear.
She looked at Briony, a faint smile touching her pale lips. “After all the ways I went after you, here you are, paying for a caregiver for me and even taking care of my son. Briony, has anyone ever told you that you're too soft-hearted?”
Briony smiled faintly. "To say all that in one breath, it looks like you're really going to be fine."
Xenia paused, then laughed, her gaze shifting to Stewart, who stood beside Briony. "Stewart, she's quite skilled at using a soft touch to get her way. You'd better watch out, or she'll have you wrapped around her little finger."
Stewart's lips curved. "Bryn is always right."
Watching their easy back-and-forth, Xenia chuckled. "I know you two have just rekindled things and are in your honeymoon phase, but could you tone it down a bit in front of a patient?"
Xenia was putting on a brave face. Her complexion was still terrible, and though she spoke a lot, her breathing was still a little too rapid.
"You just woke up. You should talk less," Briony said, leaning over and gently squeezing Xenia's arm in a comforting gesture.
Xenia froze for a second, then smiled. "You're an infuriating woman, Briony."
Though her words were harsh and cold, her eyes betrayed her, turning red against her will.
As a woman herself, Briony felt a pang of sympathy and sorrow for Xenia.
"Just focus on getting better. Vernon is staying with me right now. He's very well- behaved and polite. When you're feeling a bit stronger, we'll bring him to see you."
At the mention of Vernon, a slight frown creased Xenia's brow.
She lowered her gaze, a flicker of resolve in her eyes. Then she looked up at Briony, pursed her lips, and asked, "Is... is Vernon okay?"
Briony turned to Stewart.
Receiving her signal, Stewart looked
at Xenia and said, "He asked me
about you in private. I told him you were away on a business trip
abroad but I get the feeling he
suspects something happened to
you. He's just hiding it and not letting
on."
At his words, Xenia gave a bitter smile. “I've failed him. I'm not a good mother."
"Vernon is a smart boy; he'll
understand," Briony comforted her.
"But you need to get well soon
you can
make it up to him. And you
can never, ever do something this foolish again."
"I won't. A trip to death's door has given me some clarity," Xenia said, her eyes firm as she looked at Briany. "Help me call Maynard. Tell to come over right now.
shim
Briony frowned. "Are you sure you want to see him now?"
Briony had witnessed firsthand how cruel Maynard could be to Xenia. She didn't think seeing him at this moment would be good for her.
But Xenia was adamant. “If I call him myself, he definitely won't come. But if you call, I'm sure he will."
Briony's brow furrowed, caught in a dilemma.
Stewart suddenly spoke up. “Bryn, just do as she asks."
Surprised, Briony turned to look at him.
Stewart gave her a slight nod. “I think Ms. Cooper has something very important to settle with Maynard."
Briony looked back at Xenia.
Xenia nodded. “He's right. And for Maynard, this is a matter of utmost importance!"
