Chapter 100:

Fernanda’s name carried an undeniable weight, a fact Wendy couldn’t ignore.

The woman was Bobby’s announced fiancée.

“Fernanda Morgan?” Wendy repeated, her tone sharp.

She wanted to press further—was this the Fernanda who was engaged to Bobby? But one glance at her flawless elegance and the prestige of being accepted into Esaham University left Wendy with little doubt. This had to be the Morgan family’s eldest daughter, renowned in Esaham.

Losing her appetite, Wendy set her spoon down with a clatter, folded her arms, and leaned away from Fernanda.

Her eyes, once warm and inviting, grew cold and wary. A subtle hostility gleamed in her gaze, as though she were bracing herself against a rival.

Meanwhile, Fernanda remained calm, gracefully continuing her meal, seemingly unaffected by Wendy’s shifting demeanor.

“Did you approach me deliberately?” Wendy asked, her voice edged with suspicion. “Because of my history with Bobby?”

“No,” Fernanda replied evenly, shaking her head. “I didn’t know you before. It wasn’t until I saw you and Bobby arguing at the bar that I pieced things together. It’s strange, isn’t it? How small the world can be.”

“Strange, indeed.” Wendy narrowed her eyes, doubt clouding her face. It was hard to believe that such a peculiar encounter could be mere coincidence—the ex-girlfriend and the fiancée, crossing paths this way.

Fernanda smiled, her tone light. “Come on, why would I approach you deliberately? What could I gain from you?”

Wendy paused, considering her words. It made sense—she was just an ordinary person with no influence or leverage.

If Fernanda were here to dig into her past with Bobby, she would have acted long ago.

Wendy trusted her instincts. Fernanda didn’t seem like someone conniving. From their first encounter in the exam room, Wendy had found her likable, even imagining they could become friends at school.

That thought softened Wendy’s stance, and the tension in her shoulders eased.

“Who sent you that text?” Wendy asked after a moment.

“Ava,” Fernanda said with a quiet chuckle. “She didn’t realize we were connected and tried to stir trouble.”

The text wasn’t lengthy—just a spiteful message insinuating that Bobby’s ex-girlfriend had returned, carrying a romantic past that would overshadow Fernanda, rendering her insignificant as his fiancée.

Ironically, the two individuals Ava sought to provoke were now seated together, reading her message.

“Pathetic,” Wendy scoffed, her tone laced with disdain. “Using me against you—it’s ridiculous.”

“Exactly.” Fernanda sighed, raising her bandaged leg slightly. “She likes Bobby and can’t stand me. See this? Her handiwork.”

“She’s that vicious?” Wendy’s brow arched in disbelief. “No wonder the news about her tampering with a motorcycle at a race caused such a stir. So it was you.”

Fernanda shrugged. “What about you? When you were with Bobby, did she ever target you?”

Wendy frowned as unpleasant memories surfaced. “She did, but nothing serious—just annoying pranks. I didn’t let it bother me too much. After my breakup with Bobby, she left me alone.”

Now, Wendy only wanted Bobby to stay out of her life entirely.

Renewed involvement would undoubtedly bring more chaos. The past held nothing but pain. She yearned to leave it behind and focus on moving forward, free of old entanglements.

Fernanda said no more, quietly finishing her meal.

For Wendy, the walls of mistrust had crumbled.

When they finished eating, neither was in a hurry to leave.

Earlier, the sky had been blanketed with heavy clouds, casting a somber mood. Now, the clouds had cleared, revealing an endless expanse of blue. The sunlight spilled down in golden waves, almost blinding in its intensity.

Inside the restaurant, the air conditioning hummed softly, offering a refreshing escape from the heat outside.

There were no other patrons in the restaurant. The silence stretched, broken only by the faint click of the owner’s keyboard at the cash register.

“You…” Wendy hesitated, glancing at Fernanda before quickly averting her gaze. Trying to sound nonchalant, she asked, “When do you plan to get married?”

“No plans,” Fernanda replied, her tone steady. “I’m just nineteen. There’s plenty of time, and honestly, who knows what could happen in the future?”

“Do you want to marry him?” Wendy asked, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Do you even like him?”

Though Wendy feigned indifference, her tense posture betrayed her. Fernanda noticed how serious—and nervous—she seemed, clearly invested in the response.

For Fernanda, Wendy was the first person in this city she truly wanted as a friend. She wasn’t about to let anything, least of all Bobby, ruin that chance.

In truth, Fernanda had come here today to clarify her relationship with Bobby.

Unexpectedly, Ava’s meddlesome text had provided the perfect opportunity to broach the subject.

“I don’t like him,” Fernanda said plainly. “We’re just acquaintances, maybe… just ordinary friends.”

“Then why don’t you end the engagement?” Wendy pressed. “Doesn’t carrying the title of Bobby’s fiancée feel like a burden?”

“I’ve tried, but it’s complicated.” Fernanda shrugged. “I’m not rushing it. Well, the title has its uses.”

For example, it offered a shield against the chaos Robert often brought into her life.

Wendy frowned. She found Fernanda puzzling.

Fernanda’s carefree nature seemed at odds with someone who would let themselves be shackled by something as weighty as an engagement.

But why endure the title as Bobby’s fiancée if she didn’t even like him?

“Are you…” Wendy’s voice took on an edge of contempt. “Are you someone who craves power and status?”

Fernanda had just grabbed a tissue to wipe her hands, but hearing that, she crumpled it up and threw it at Wendy. “Do you really think I’m that kind of person?”

“No.” Wendy shook her head, her honesty disarming. “You don’t strike me as someone who’d care about money or status.”

Fernanda smiled.

“By the way,” Wendy said suddenly, shifting gears. “The new semester starts soon. Do you want to share a dorm room with me? Esaham University’s dorms are for two people. If you agreed, it’d save us both from getting stuck with random roommates. Unless… you’re planning to stay at home?”

“I’ll be staying in the dorm,” Fernanda replied.

That so-called home? She’d visit occasionally, but living there full-time would only lead to unnecessary friction.

“Perfect.” Wendy smiled, her tone light. “Let’s step outside. I could use a cigarette.”

They exited the restaurant, and Wendy immediately pulled out a pack of cigarettes. Lighting one, she exhaled a slow, deliberate puff of smoke, the curling tendrils dissipating in the warm air.

“You might find this hard to believe,” Fernanda began unexpectedly, “but I’ve met Bobby countless times, and he still has no idea of my real identity.”

Wendy paused mid-drag, her brows knitting together. “What do you mean?”

Fernanda sighed. “For some reason, he doesn’t realize that I am his so-called fiancée. In fact, he has a massive grudge against his fiancée and seems to outright despise her.”

Wendy blinked, genuinely taken aback.

This was a twist she hadn’t anticipated.

“Why are you telling me this now?” Wendy asked, her voice lower.

“I’m worried you might blow my cover,” Fernanda said, nodding toward the street. “Speaking of which… isn’t that Bobby?”

Wendy turned, and sure enough, Bobby was striding toward them from the direction of the police station. A stunning woman trailed closely behind him.

Bobby was a real hit with the ladies.
