Chapter 248
Chapter 248:
Bonita also worried that Beckett might turn his rage on Fernanda, dragging her into this nightmare and causing her trouble she didn’t deserve. The last thing she wanted was for someone else to suffer because of her situation.
As Bonita thought about it, an idea started to form in her mind.
After a brief pause, she hesitated before gently pulling on Fernanda’s arm and quietly saying, “Fernanda, maybe it’s better if we aren’t friends anymore.”
Tears streamed down Bonita’s cheeks as she finished her sentence.
She valued her few friendships deeply, cherishing each friend. Among the friends Bonita had made since starting college, Fernanda was special to her.
The idea of ending their friendship was agonizing, yet Bonita felt compelled by circumstance. She couldn’t risk entangling Fernanda in her personal issues.
The thought of Fernanda suffering consequences for her sake was unbearable for Bonita.
Fernanda, perceptive as always, grasped the gravity of Bonita’s decision.
“You’re concerned about pulling me into your problems, right?” Fernanda said, her smile warm and reassuring. “Don’t worry, I’m not scared.”
“But I can’t let that happen,” Bonita replied earnestly. “You saw what happened earlier. Beckett is dangerous. When he snaps, he’s utterly unpredictable. It’s not safe to provoke him for my sake. We should stop contacting each other to keep him from targeting you.”
“Don’t worry at all; I’m not afraid one bit,” Fernanda said, touching Bonita’s shoulder with a soft pat. “Being your friend makes me happy; you’re incredibly adorable. I’d be nothing but a coward if I fled every time a friend was in trouble, and that’s just not my way.”
Bonita felt a profound sense of guilt, even as she was touched by the gesture.
The kinder her friends acted, the more burdensome she felt to them.
That morning, a number of people were waiting outside the hospital for taxis. Several taxis arrived but were quickly taken by others. Suddenly, a white SUV pulled up, the window rolled down, and a voice called out, “Fernanda?”
Turning around, Fernanda recognized Jeff in the driver’s seat.

“Hi, Jeff,” Fernanda said as she greeted him.
“Did you come to see Neal?” Jeff asked.
“Yes,” Fernanda replied with a slight blink. “Did you come for the same reason?”
Given their mutual connections at the Esports Academy—Neal being a prominent figure and Jeff serving as the student council president—it made sense that they were acquainted.
Jeff gave a brief nod. “Yes, I had a chat with him, and now I’m getting ready to leave.”
His attention shifted to Bonita. “Didn’t she visit Neal earlier as well?” Earlier, Bonita had entered Neal’s ward first. During her visit, Jeff had arrived, prompting Bonita to politely excuse herself and run into Beckett.
“I was actually planning to go back to school with her,” Fernanda said. Noticing the tear stains and faint bruises on Bonita’s face, Jeff guessed she might have been in some trouble.
Even though Fernanda mentioned visiting Neal, Jeff hadn’t seen her in the ward, leading him to think she was possibly planning to help this troubled girl.
