Chapter 538
Chapter 538:
“I’m not at school,” she said.
“Where are you?” her father asked, his voice full of impatience. “I don’t care where you are, just get back to your school right now! Darn it, you really have some nerve. How dare you have the police arrest Beckett, huh?”
Bonita’s father’s unexpected presence unnerved her; she hadn’t anticipated this. Just yesterday, when the police mentioned Beckett’s family would collect him, she never imagined her own family would get involved.
Bonita quickly rushed out of bed, her first instinct to go straight to the school gate as her father had instructed. But then she paused, second-guessing herself. With her father’s temper, he might end up scolding her right there in front of everyone. The thought of public disgrace was unbearable.
“I’m near the police station right now,” she told her father, her voice trembling slightly.
She gave him the name of the hotel and her room number, then said, “Just take a cab here.”
She ended the call abruptly, unable to tolerate his rants any longer. Retreating back to the bed, Bonita pressed a hand against her chest, feeling her heart thumping violently, as though trying to escape her throat. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what would happen when her father arrived.
Her fingers trembled as she searched for Fernanda’s number, the comforting words from the night before echoing in her mind. Fernanda had assured her that she would help and protect her, urging her to contact her if anything went wrong.
But could she really ask for more help?
Fernanda had been a pillar of support the previous day, and now, with her family issues at the forefront, Bonita hesitated to bother her further. With that thought, she shut off her phone and buried her face in her hands.
Time marched on relentlessly, the ticking of the clock amplifying the oppressive silence.

Lost in thought, Bonita was suddenly jolted back to reality by a violent series of knocks at the door. The forceful knocks were more like someone hammering at the barrier.
She opened the door to find her father, his expression contorted with rage. Without a word, he delivered a harsh slap to her face.
It landed on the same spot where Beckett had slapped her the day before. The original bruise was still tender, and now it was compounded by fresh trauma.
Before Bonita could react, her father’s hand came down on her other cheek. The impact forced her teeth to slice into the inside of her cheek, filling her mouth with the taste of blood.
Her father’s relentless slaps continued, each one ringing in her ears until all other sounds were drowned out. His actions seemed to slow, each movement and harsh word unfolding before her in excruciating detail. His face was twisted with anger and spite.
After what felt like an eternity, the ringing in her ears faded, and she became aware of her father’s curses. He only cursed her for getting too bold, for daring to provoke Beckett.
