Chapter 620:

Dark circles were etched deeply under Ector’s eyes, and the red streaks in the whites of his eyes betrayed the many nights of lost sleep.

Fernanda, who kept her finger on the pulse of financial news, was keenly aware that Voligny Company was caught in the tempest stirred by Robert’s recent scandal.

The company’s leadership was in turmoil, with its chairman becoming a notorious figure in the media. Outside the company headquarters, protesters waved signs denouncing Robert. They called him an outrageous father for disowning his daughter over the end of her engagement.

This public outcry had triggered a widespread boycott of the company’s cosmetics and skincare products. Detractors argued that a man as unfeeling as Robert could hardly be trusted to create quality products.

At the heart of this storm, Ector, the general manager, was understandably swamped.

Fernanda glanced at Ector’s haggard face and sighed gently.

“To be clear, I’m not going to meet Robert. You know as well as I do that he won’t have anything positive to say, and I don’t want to waste my time on him.”

Ector gave a slight nod of agreement.

He understood Fernanda’s reluctance and shared her sentiment; he didn’t want her to confront Robert either.

Yet, Robert’s persistence was wearing him thin. During the day, Ector grappled with company crises, and by night, Robert’s insistent calls pressed him to persuade Fernanda. Ector’s usually composed demeanor was beginning to crack.

Increasingly, he found himself staying away from home, preferring a small apartment near the company.

“Don’t worry,” Fernanda assured him, her tone firm yet soothing. “I understand how important Voligny Company is to you, and I’ll take it easy on the matter. But I do hope Robert comes to realize that his real asset is having a son like you.”

Fernanda’s willingness to show Ector some mercy stemmed from the fact that he was a kind and upright soul. Otherwise, she might have seized this tumult to strike a harsh blow against Robert.

Ector understood Fernanda’s implication and smiled gently, his tension easing like the setting sun—warm and soothing, leaving behind a lingering sense of comfort.

“I’ll step in from now on,” Ector assured her. “I’ll make sure Dad doesn’t bother you as much.”

“Thank you.”

“I’ll leave you be then.” Ector took a step back, giving her space. “Head upstairs, and remember, you can always call me if you need anything.”

Fernanda waved her hand and walked into the dorm building.

Watching her silhouette disappear, Ector finally turned to leave.

The tree-lined path, stripped of its summer lushness, now bore twisted branches reaching skyward.

The path was clean, and the crisp sound of Ector’s leather shoes filled the air.

As he rounded the corner, a teasing voice called out, “Tsk, your sister didn’t come with you?”
