Chapter 744:

As she turned to leave, the man darted after her, panic lending speed to his steps. “Wait, wait! Don’t go! Please, save me! Or ask Neal to help me get out of this mess. I can’t stay here forever!”

Fernanda spun around abruptly, her eyes narrowing as she studied his face up close.

He had a faint resemblance to Neal, and the similarity hung in the air like an echo; however, the man’s worldly and despicable demeanor was entirely different from Neal’s.

The thought flickered in her mind like a shadow. How could someone like Neal have a father like this?

Fernanda sighed softly, but before she could step away, Cristian gripped her arm.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, her brow arching in mild surprise.

Cristian’s gaze lingered on the man for a moment, his expression veiled with suspicion. Leaning closer to Fernanda, he murmured in a low voice, “There’s something odd about him.”

Her brows knitted together. “What do you mean?”

Cristian leaned in further, whispering a few words that made Fernanda’s bright eyes widen in shock.

“Are you sure?” she asked, disbelief coloring her voice.

“It’s likely. He doesn’t seem well. We’ll know for sure once the tests are in,” Cristian replied, his tone measured but firm.

The revelation sent a cascade of thoughts tumbling through Fernanda’s mind like dominoes.

“So that’s why… everything makes sense now.”

Questions that had once swirled in her mind like restless clouds finally began to clear.

No wonder Neal was so frugal. No wonder he always seemed to be one step behind his financial struggles, no matter how high his income was. The pieces of the puzzle finally aligned, painting a picture she hadn’t dared to imagine before.

She didn’t doubt Cristian’s instincts for a second. His judgment was sharp, like a blade honed to perfection. As they left, Cristian spoke to the duty officer, his tone brisk. “Run a blood test on him. Check for drug use.”

The officer stiffened, his demeanor instantly serious. “Understood.”

Cristian and Fernanda exited the station and climbed into his car. The night wrapped around the city, but the streets were awash with light, their glow reflecting off the windshield and casting a soft halo around Cristian’s face.

Half of his features were illuminated, sharp and defined, while the other half seemed swallowed by the encroaching darkness, as if he were straddling two worlds.

His jaw was taut, a silent testament to his inner turmoil. The veins on the back of his hand stood out as he gripped the steering wheel, betraying the tension simmering beneath his composed exterior.

“What’s on your mind?” Fernanda asked softly, her voice threading through the silence like a delicate melody.
