Chapter 784:

“Yeah.”

She hesitated. “What about us?”

Neal cracked his eyes open. “What do you mean?”

She swallowed. “What kind of relationship do we have now?” Neal’s eyes briefly flashed with bewilderment before he smiled moments later.

His countenance wavered between frustration and laughter. “Selective memory? You just introduced yourself as my girlfriend to the elderly man.”

“I know,” she admitted. “I was just afraid you wouldn’t agree.”

“Your worry is uncalled for.” Neal’s voice was calm, steady. “If you’re fine with it, so am I.”

Bonita was aware of what he meant. He was referring to his father and his birth family.

“I fell for you,” she said simply. “Not your family, not your history. Just you.”

Even though she appeared somewhat humorous with the huge gauze covering her nose, her sincerity was evident.

Someone who had always been timid had transformed into a warrior when it came to him. She dared to bare her heart, to chase what she wanted, and to stand in the line of fire—all to protect him.

Neal couldn’t help but wonder what he had done to deserve such unwavering devotion.

Letting out a quiet sigh, he reached over and tousled her hair. “My silly girl.”

Bonita’s cheeks flushed as she took his hand in both of hers, guiding it down onto the blanket.

His hands were the kind artists used as references—long, elegant fingers with just the right balance of strength and delicacy.

“Then let yesterday be our anniversary,” Neal said. “It’s your birthday, and it’s also the day we officially became a couple.”

Bonita nodded softly. “Alright.”

There was something poetic about it.

“In the future, we can celebrate both together,” Neal added with a smirk.

Bonita’s smile deepened. “Okay.”

She never cared for grand displays or extravagant gifts. As long as she had him, that was more than enough.

The next morning, when Fernanda arrived for a visit, Bonita was still sound asleep. Her hands were latched onto Neal’s like a child clutching a treasured keepsake, unwilling to let go.

Neal sat in the chair beside her, scrolling through his phone with his free hand. When he heard movement, he turned around.

His eyes were rimmed with red—clear evidence of a sleepless night.

Fernanda placed a thermos on the table and motioned to Neal. Carefully, he slipped his hand from Bonita’s grasp, tucking the blanket around her before tiptoeing out of the room with Fernanda.
