Chapter 785:

Outside, two figures stood waiting—a poised middle-aged woman and a younger man who all but screamed tech-geek.

“Meet Rosita Nelson, our chief editor, and Hamilton Clifford from PR,” Fernanda said briskly. Neal shook hands with both of them.

“They’ll be taking you back to your hometown for some interviews,” Fernanda continued. “We need to revisit what happened with your family. Once the interviews are out, we can control the narrative and minimize the damage from this mess.”

Neal hesitated.

“The past cannot be changed. Nothing is too big for you to handle.” Fernanda gave Neal a look. “Those things can only be genuinely resolved when you are able to narrate your own experiences from the past. You have to go past this obstacle on your own, Neal. You have to fight this struggle. Nobody else is able to assist you.”

“I know.” His Adam’s apple bobbed as Neal swallowed. “Alright, I’ll do it.”

The thought of confronting his dark past made his stomach twist, but he owed it to himself—and to Bonita—to stop running and face the shadows head-on.

It was time to stop being haunted.

Time to grow.

Bonita woke to an empty room, Neal’s absence making her momentarily question whether yesterday had been nothing more than a fleeting dream conjured by exhaustion.

“You’re awake. How do you feel?”

Bonita turned toward the voice and found Fernanda standing by the window, arms crossed, an easy confidence in her posture.

“I’m… Fernanda… When did you get here?”

“Two hours ago.”

Bonita hesitated before speaking again. “Then… when you arrived, was anyone else here?”

Fernanda chuckled, the sound carrying a note of quiet amusement. “Neal was still here when I came, but I sent him off to handle a few things. Don’t worry, he didn’t disappear into thin air, and yesterday wasn’t a dream.”

Realizing how transparent her thoughts were, Bonita flushed with embarrassment.

Fernanda retrieved a thermos, pouring out warm porridge before handing it to Bonita. Moments later, the nurse entered for a routine check-up.

After a thorough examination, the nurse confirmed that Bonita’s condition was nothing serious. She simply needed rest at home and was to return the next day for the remainder of her treatment.

Fernanda accompanied Bonita back to the dormitory at school.

Given her current state, work was out of the question. Bonita promptly informed her superior about the accident, sending them a copy of her hospital report. The HR department assured her that they would process her departure paperwork and settle her wages, urging her to focus on recovery.

Bonita had always been diligent, never allowing the title of “intern” to justify a half-hearted approach to her responsibilities. She poured genuine effort into every task, earning the respect of her department manager. Before ending the call, he expressed hope that their paths might cross again in the future.
