Chapter 821:

Watching Fernanda’s silence, Amory reassured her. “Miss Morgan, don’t worry, Mr. Reed will be just fine.”

Leaning against the wall, Fernanda felt the cold seep through her thin shirt, causing her to shiver down to her fingertips.

Her eyes were locked on the operating room door, reminding her of another moment of tense waiting—during Hiram’s surgery. That situation had ended in heartbreak. She dreaded the possibility of hearing “We did everything we could” once more.

Hiram had been weak, and the surgery was risky, but it had been the only option. Despite bracing for the worst, the reality had been tough to face. The weight of that memory seemed to drain Fernanda’s strength. Gradually, she slid down the wall to the floor.

“Miss Morgan…” Amory said, observing her collapse with concern. “Perhaps you should rest a bit.”

Fernanda shook her head, just as the operating room door swung open.

She scrambled to her feet, her legs weak, and rushed toward the doctor.

She inquired urgently, “Doctor, how did it go?”

The doctor, removing his mask and wiping away sweat, smiled warmly. “The surgery was a success.”

Relief washed over Fernanda, as if a frigid grip on her heart had loosened. Strength returned to her body, and warmth flooded her veins. She inhaled deeply while Amory also felt relief at the doctor’s reassurance.

Cristian was soon wheeled out, unconscious, with an oxygen mask on his face, his body swathed in heavy bandages.

When the doctor transferred him to the intensive care unit for further examination, Fernanda discovered that Cristian had suffered two gunshot wounds—one in his thigh and the other in his shoulder.

The operation on his thigh had been the most challenging. The bullet had lodged dangerously close to the aorta. The surgeons had to work with extreme precision to ensure his leg could be saved. Fortunately, they had succeeded.

If they hadn’t, Fernanda couldn’t begin to imagine how a man as proud as Cristian would handle the loss of his leg.

A nurse ushered Fernanda out of the room, advising her that she could visit Cristian once he regained consciousness.

Sitting on a chair outside the ICU, she watched Cristian through the glass.

Experiencing this situation revealed to her just how deeply concerned she was for him. Cristian had grown to occupy a significant place in her heart.

Fernanda had never truly known romantic love before. Unsure of how it should feel, she had chosen to be with Cristian, moved by his kindness and the genuine affection she felt towards him.

As time passed, she realized just how crucial he had become to her, evolving into a vital presence in her life.

Early the next morning, around three, Cristian regained consciousness. A nurse briefly checked on him before informing Fernanda that she could spend a few minutes with him.
