Cristian understood her attachment to family ties; she wouldn’t have bothered coming otherwise. She had held out hope for a warm reception from the Coopers, only to be let down in the same way the Morgans had made her feel.
At that moment, Cristian felt an intense pain in his heart. He wanted nothing more than to whisk her away from these so-called relatives, ensuring she’d never have to endure their coldness again. They simply didn’t deserve her.
Then, her message arrived. Beneath her composed words, he could sense her kindness; she was crafting a lie. If he hadn’t witnessed the truth for himself, he might have actually believed she was experiencing the warmth of familial love.
He followed her, staying within her line of sight so she could see him whenever she looked back. Then, she turned to face him.
His fingers brushed her cheek gently, trailing down to her shoulders and back, before he pulled her closer into his embrace.
“Don’t expect anything from others anymore,” Cristian murmured, his chin resting on the top of her head. “You have me, and that’s enough.”
He was determined to give her the family love she yearned for, coupled with the romantic love she deserved. Everyone else was secondary. If she expected nothing from others, she would never face disappointment again.
Fernanda wrapped her arms around his waist tightly. Taking a deep breath, she exhaled slowly, nodding slightly. “Yes, having you is more than enough for me.”
Resting her head on his chest, Fernanda could hear his heartbeat, each pulse quick and successive, a testament to his anxiety and unrest. She looked up at him with concern, her hand on his chest.
“Is everything alright?”
“I’m scared,” he confessed quickly.

She had once been tough, guarded against the world. But Cristian had been patient. He had broken through her defenses bit by bit, gradually opening her up to happiness. Now, he feared that all his efforts would be in vain.
Fernanda understood his concern and smiled. “I won’t,” she reassured him. Her voice was steady. “I know you’re not like them.” She could feel his love in every little thing he did, surrounding her like an unshakable force. And then, there was their shared, treasured past.
“I will always believe you,” she said, her words a balm to his troubled heart.
Cristian felt an immense sense of relief. His heartbeat, once erratic, began to slow. Holding her hand, he brought it to his lips and kissed it softly. “That’s good,” he whispered. If she said so, he believed it.
