“Yes,” Fernanda assured with a nod. “So you need not worry about me causing him harm. I won’t, because I truly care for him deeply.”
Her affection for him had blossomed since she arrived in Esaham, slowly captivated by his gentle nature. Her emotions reached their peak when she discovered their shared history.
“I understand that you left me here alone to discuss Cristian,” Fernanda said.
“You’re part of his family, and I appreciate your concern for him. I want to assure you that I’ll treat him well. No matter the challenges, I’m not frightened. I will not abandon him.”
Fernanda genuinely felt joy for Cristian, knowing he had relatives who truly cared about him. Despite the indifference from Curran and other members of the Reed family, she felt a sense of warmth knowing that someone, like Martin, truly understood.
Martin and Judie cherished him. Haley, too, wished for his happiness. In a way, Fernanda envied him. Unlike Cristian, she had no family to support her. As her words dissipated, silence enveloped the room once again. The room’s temperature subtly increased, and the aroma from the scented candles grew stronger. The delicate scent of gardenias filled the space, adding a layer of comforting warmth.
Martin retrieved a cigarette from his case, but he refrained from lighting it, considering Fernanda’s presence. The cigarette rotated through his rough fingers, occasionally tapping against the coffee table with a soft clink.
“You’re correct,” Martin said. “I did intend to speak with you about Cristian, but there’s something else you haven’t considered.”
Fernanda looked at him, her expression one of confusion.
“It’s about you,” Martin continued, meeting her gaze. “I want you to know that in the future, regardless of the challenges you face, you can count on me. Consider me your support, your ally. Don’t be afraid; I’ll always be by your side.” Martin’s words visibly startled Fernanda, so much so that her mouth hung open in surprise for a lengthy moment.
“Think of me as part of your family. I was very close to your mother, and we grew up together. Many assumed we would end up as a couple. It’s not exactly that. The bond between your mother and me goes even deeper than that of family. That’s why we arranged the engagement between you and Bobby, to ensure our children would be cared for by someone we trusted completely. I’m aware of how Robert and his family treat you. Their attitude is unlikely to change; it’s simply their way. The same goes for your mother’s relatives. Her impulsive decisions did cause considerable harm within her family. It makes sense that they carry resentment and hatred in their hearts.”

Martin’s tone was soft and soothing, making Fernanda feel a comforting warmth flow into her heart.
“Though your mother is gone, I will always be your support,” Martin assured her. “Whether it concerns you and Cristian or other challenges you face in the future, I will be here to support you. You might consider trusting me. You are still very young. There’s no need for you to handle everything on your own.”
