Sarai sighed and glanced towards Toby.

“Go ahead,” Toby encouraged. “Your education should be the top priority.”

Felipa and Sarai were visibly disappointed, but with Toby’s approval, they knew there was nothing they could do.

Toby then drove Fernanda and Cristian to the train station. With more than forty minutes until their train’s departure, Toby didn’t rush them inside.

Cristian headed to a nearby convenience store to pick up some snacks, leaving Fernanda and Toby a moment to chat.

“Fernanda, don’t be upset with your aunts,” Toby said. “They… they got a bit carried away with their interests.”

Fernanda maintained her smile. “It’s fine. I’m not upset with them.”

Indeed, she wasn’t. She had long understood that familial bonds didn’t necessarily mean loyalty or love.

“Even if mistakes were made, they were Gracie’s, not yours,” Toby added. “Your aunts’ initial actions were inappropriate, but I’m relieved you returned to visit your grandmother.”

“Look after yourself in Esaham. Remember, if you need anything, I’m here,” Toby said.

Fernanda nodded. “Thank you.”

She saw Cristian and Bobby returning through the car window, then opened the door and got out.

As she closed the door, she added, “Tell my cousin to focus on his grad school exams. If he decides to apply to my university, I can help him get in touch with a professor.”

Toby gave a warm smile. “Alright. Take care, Fernanda.”

While Fernanda might appear reserved on the outside, Toby knew her compassion ran deep.

When Toby got home, Felipa and Sarai were still there.

Felipa glanced behind him and, noticing he had returned alone, couldn’t help but ask, “Fernanda just left like that?”

Toby nodded, slipping into his slippers. “There isn’t much for her here.”

“How could there not be? This is where Gracie grew up. If she cared at all about her mother, she would want to look around,” Felipa murmured.

Toby turned and fixed her with a look. “You know exactly why Fernanda doesn’t want to stay here. Don’t pretend otherwise. How did you treat her when she first came? You left her out when dividing the family assets. Even letting her stay at the house was too much for you. With so many relatives around, she still ended up in a hotel.”

Felipa looked ashamed but refused to concede any wrongdoing. “It just wasn’t convenient that day. Even Sarai, with her large house, wasn’t willing to let her stay.”

Sarai quickly interjected, “I said it was because I didn’t want to disturb her. Besides, it’s not a big deal. There’s no need to make a fuss.”
