Chapter 969:

“I resigned because I needed to move forward,” he said. “But that doesn’t change anything between us. We’re always family.”

Fernanda returned to her dorm that night and launched the game. She only logged in to check on Kevin. With everything happening at home, she figured he might not be in the best mood. She didn’t hold any grudges against him anymore. Besides, he had looked for her after Fulton had dragged her away that day.

At first, Kevin wasn’t online. A minute later, his avatar lit up. He must have gotten a notification that she was online and joined immediately.

“Nimbus.” That was the first thing he messaged her after logging in. No emojis. No teasing. Just a plain greeting.

Fernanda could picture the melancholy look on Kevin’s face.

“Want to play?” she asked.

“Nah,” Kevin replied.

As far as Fernanda could remember, this was the first time in years he had turned down a game with her. She simply responded with, “Okay.” He didn’t text back.

In his dark bedroom, the glow from his screen was the only source of light.

Kevin’s eyes were red and puffy. It was obvious he had been crying. He stared at the screen without really seeing it, unsure of what to do. The moment he saw the notification that Nimbus was online, he logged in automatically. It had become second nature at this point.

Even with Nimbus there, he had no interest in playing.

His own response felt distant, and he wondered if it came off too cold. He didn’t want Nimbus to take it the wrong way. But everything inside him felt tangled and heavy, like something was pressing against his chest, making it hard to breathe. He needed to let it out. He needed to talk to someone.

It was easier to confide in an online friend than to his schoolmates. At least with Nimbus, he didn’t have to worry about judgment. No real names. No real-life consequences.

So he typed, “Can we talk for a while?”

The reply came almost instantly. “Sure.”

Kevin hesitated before typing, “My family is a mess right now. Our company is in trouble. My parents got divorced. And it’s because of one of my sisters.”

He paused, then added, “Well, not entirely her fault, but she’s part of it. I get that my parents have treated her unfairly. She’s had it rough.”

He kept going. “I won’t lie. I do resent her sometimes. If she had acted differently, maybe our family wouldn’t have fallen apart. But at the same time, I understand her. She’s been through a lot.”

Another message followed. “And honestly? She’s incredible. She’s good at everything. I used to dislike her and even messed with her. But over time, I started admiring her. She’s amazing. I look up to her. And yeah… I’m proud of her.”
