The night felt less daunting, and her thoughts, too, seemed to clear.
“People soften as they age,” Bobby said, breaking the silence. “If there’s one thing my grandfather regrets most, it’s divorcing my grandmother. He wanted to reconcile with her for years, but she’s never agreed.”
A mischievous glint sparked in his eyes as he leaned closer to Fernanda. “But you might just be able to change her mind. If you can convince my grandmother to remarry my grandfather, he might be so grateful that he’ll fully support your relationship with Cristian. Think of it as a golden opportunity—one you can’t afford to pass up.”
“Golden opportunity?” Fernanda repeated, raising an eyebrow. The phrase sounded a little far-fetched.
Bobby scratched his head. “Forget the fancy words. You get what I mean.”
“Whether your grandparents get back together is up to them,” she said. “If they both want it, I can help nudge things along. But if Curran is the only one interested and Ashley isn’t, I won’t push it. That wouldn’t be fair to her.”
Bobby smirked. “She wants to. Otherwise, she would’ve moved on by now.”
Fernanda laughed and gave him a playful shove. “I don’t think so.”
Still, she found it comforting that Ashley seemed so fond of her. Whatever issues Ashley and Cristian had, they could figure them out on their own. Taking advantage of anyone’s feelings was out of the question for Fernanda.
About thirty minutes later, Ashley and Curran stepped out of the room. Ashley looked composed, but Curran’s disappointment was impossible to miss. Fernanda wondered if he had asked Ashley to remarry him and had been turned down.
Trying to smooth things over, Curran suggested that Ashley stay at the Reed estate for a few days so they could all spend more time together. But Ashley declined.
She mentioned having art exhibitions in two other cities and needing to catch an early flight the next morning. Then she turned to Fernanda. “Want to come with me?”
Fernanda had grown to like her, and there was nothing urgent keeping her at the estate. The offer sounded tempting. “Why not?” she said. Ashley gave a satisfied nod, and the group made their way to the parking lot.

Ashley walked ahead, chatting with Bobby, while Curran gently pulled Fernanda aside.
Curran leaned in close and lowered his voice. “Fernanda, tell me something. Have I treated you well?”
She gave him a bright smile. “Of course.”
“And I’ve never done anything to upset you, right?”
Fernanda tapped a finger against her chin, pretending to mull it over. “Hmm…”
Curran tensed. “Why are you hesitating? It shouldn’t take this long to answer! What have I ever done to upset you?”
Fernanda blinked. “You’ve put me on your blacklist twice.”
