Chapter 738
"What does your survival have to do with me?" Marin asked flatly.
"Marin, how can you be so heartless!"
"I'm heartless. Deal with it."
Lavinia slammed her empty glass down, buried her face in her hands, and began weeping loudly.
"Honey, just do it as a favor to me. Give her one more chance," Ellison said, frowning.
"Ellison, I don't like wasting breath, and I don't play games. Just like I told you yesterday, this company only has room for one of us. It's her or me. You choose." "Marin, she already apologized to you! What more do you want?!" Ellison roared. Marin gave a bitter smile. "So you're screaming at me for her sake?"
"I... I made a promise to my professor-"
"Stop bringing up your professor. I went to see him a few days ago. He told me he never asked you to look out for Lavinia. In fact, he thinks she lacks competence and isn't grounded enough. He said she was never a good fit for our company to begin with!"
Ellison froze. "You went behind my back and interrogated my mentor?! You trust me that little?"
"I—"
"We've been married for eight years, and with that one move, you turned everything I've built into a joke! You have completely disappointed me!"
Penelope rubbed her temples. Ellison's gaslighting skills were top-tier. He had clearly manipulated Marin like this countless times before.
"It's not that I don't trust you, I just—"
"Well, the facts prove he isn't worth trusting anyway!" Penelope interrupted Marin's attempt to defend herself.
Only an idiot would try to explain themselves in a moment like this.
"This is a conversation between a husband and wife! Keep out of it!" Ellison finally lost his composure and screamed at Penelope.
Penelope blinked innocently. "I just noticed you two were missing the point, so thought I'd offer a friendly reminder. Otherwise, all this yelling isn't going to solve the problems Of course, if someone is intentionally blurring the lines and shifting the blame onto others, then they never intended to solve the problem in the first place, making all of this a waste of breath."
Ellison's temper snapped. He slammed his hand hard against the table.
"Marin, I'm putting my foot down right now. Whether you forgive Lavinia or not, I am
not letting her go!"
"Fine. I quit."
"I won't accept your resignation!"
"Ellison, you don't get to make my choices for me."
"If you dare quit, I'll... I'll divorce you!"
Marin stared at him, stunned. "Did you just say you want a divorce?"
Ellison sneered. "Look at what you've become. Selfish, bitter, and cold-blooded. You're nothing like the kind, gentle girl you used to be. Do you know that every time I look at you now, I feel a little afraid? Afraid I'll get out by your thorns. Im giving, you one last chance. If you want to keep your title as my wife, you will stop giving Lavinia a hard time, and you will stop doubting me."
Ellison's absolute lack of shame was staggering. And right on cue, Lavinia suddenly grabbed a fresh bottle of wine and started chugging it straight from the neck.
"Marin, if you don't forgive me, I'll drink myself to death!"
Marin looked at Ellison, then back at Lavinia, and let out a chilling laugh.
"You two are totally in sync. I guess I'm the outsider here."
Penelope shook her head. These two were high-level manipulators. Marin had likely suffered a lot of silent defeats at their hands.
"Marin, have you ever actually seen someone drink themselves to death on wine?"
Marin didn't quite grasp Penelope's angle, but she played along, shaking her head. "Can't say that I have."
"Me neither. Let's broaden our horizons today and watch her do it."
Penelope pulled Marin back into her chair, crossing her arms like she was settling in for a movie.
