Chapter 1662
Debra stared at the pendant.
What had happened yesterday came flooding back.
Kale was gone, and the fact hit her hard.
"It's my fault," she said in agony. "If he hadn't gone with me, he would have been alive."
"Everyone makes their calls," Marion soothed her. "If there's blame, it's on the Illuminati. I was terrified, almost losing you." The source of thɪs content is Find[ɴ]ovel.net
"I felt like you were nearby, so I wasn't afraid," she said, leaning into him. "They'll pay for hurting Drake and killing Kale. I'll make sure of it."
"No matter what happens, we're in this together," he said.
Exhaustion took over. She closed her eyes and drifted off.
When she woke up, it was already noon the next day. Her injury kept her from moving much.
Everyone gathered outside her bedroom. William came in to check on her.
"You're fine. Just change the dressings on time," he said, packing up his kit. "You guys can come in now."
Debra adjusted her clothes and leaned against the headboard. "Sorry to trouble you."
"We're in this together," Erica said. "Just focus on your recovery and don't worry about anything else."
She paused and added, "We've held the funeral for Kale and let him rest in peace."
She squeezed Debra's hand, knowing Debra was hurting.
Debra looked down. "Right now, the big thing is figuring out how to take on the Illuminati."
Everyone went quiet. It was easier said than done.
The Illuminati had been around for centuries, its roots tangled and deep. The handful of them could never shake it.
If not for the Illuminati's role in killing the former heads of the Four Great Families and taking Drake, they wouldn't even tangle with it.
"Let's not overthink it. Racking our brains won't help. When you met Michael, did you dig up anything? Did you see Drake?" Erica asked.
Debra sighed before recounting everything from the valley yesterday.
Erica shot up, pissed. "We were risking our necks to save him, and he just ditched us?"
"Cool it," Randy chimed in. "What if he's playing undercover?"
"Come on. They'd never trust him," Erica retorted.
Debra had the same doubt. It couldn't be about going undercover.
Something had to be forcing him to stick around.
