The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 104
Leilani shook her head helplessly, taking it as a joke.
The car slowly drove into Celestial Heights. Leilani thanked them and got out. Judie leaned out the window and waved at her. “Leilani, remember to rest and let those heal! See you later!”
Leilani smiled and nodded, watching the car leave before turning toward the apartment
building.
She didn’t notice a black sedan parked quietly not far away. The window slowly rolled down, revealing a pair of deep, cold eyes.
Just as Leilani grabbed her key card to enter the complex, a familiar figure walked over from the corner.
It was Josiah Sloan. He was dressed in a sharp suit, his expression much softer than when they had met at the airport. He wasn’t as cold and hard. The look he gave Leilani even held a rare trace of hesitation.
“Leilani.” He called out to her, his voice low.
Leilani paused and looked up at him, her eyes cold. She felt annoyed. The Sloans were like gum stuck to a shoe-once stepped on, you couldn’t shake them off.
“What, are you here to interrogate me again?”
Leilani’s words were thorny. But unexpectedly, facing Leilani’s hostility, Josiah only pursed his lips. For once, he wasn’t aggressive. Instead, he took a deep breath and spoke sincerely. “I was impulsive last time.”
Leilani raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised
Josiah continued, “Mom and Dad want to see you. There are some things… they want to clear up in person.”
Leilani scoffed. “They want me back just to scold me again?”
She knew exactly what kind of people Hackett and Zadie were. You couldn’t squeeze a kind word out of them if you tried. Calling her back meant nothing good.
“No.” Josiah shook his head, his gaze complex. “This time is different.”
Leilani stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed. “Alright. I’d like to see what game you’re playing this time.”
Given that Josiah’s attitude wasn’t terrible, she could agree to go back and take a look. After all, she was in the light, and the Sloans were in the dark. Leilani needed to find out what schemes they were hatching to avoid them popping out and biting her when she wasn’t looking.

She agreed so readily that Josiah was stunned for a moment, seemingly surprised by her decisiveness.
“Get in.” He turned sideways, gesturing to the car.
Leilani didn’t say another word and walked straight to his vehicle.
Inside, Josiah gripped the steering wheel. After a moment of silence, he spoke. “The situation at home hasn’t been good lately.”
Leilani leaned back in her seat, gazing out the window, her tone indifferent. “Oh? Are you going bankrupt?”
That would be good news. She’d set off fireworks to celebrate.
Josiah frowned, feeling that Leilani wished them nothing but ill. But he knew that if he got angry, Leilani wouldn’t play along and So, Josiah didn’t flare up. angry, Leilani wouldn’t play along and

Leilani chuckled. “What do your family’s affairs have to do with me?

, but some things aren’t what.”
レ
“Then what are they?” Leilani finally turned her head, her eyes sharp. “Did you bring me back from the countryside to be a scapegoat?”
Josiah’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. He was silent for a moment before whispering, “What happened back then… there might really have been a
misunderstanding.”
“A misunderstanding?” Leilani sneered. “You destroyed the surveillance footage, and now you’re telling me it was a misunderstanding?”
